My SMITHS rev counter is marked with RVI 1000/00. It is not installed. On the back there is no engraving with SMITHS. Only an kind of stamp in black whichs is difficult to read. It reads 0??R, possibly 096R
My questions:
- could it be a fake product, such as Chinese copy? I cannot recall its "history" (You´ll get there too once you reached my age...
)
- am I correct in assuming it is not a rev counter suitable for my 1275 engine with Lumention ignition?
Greetings from Sweden

Hi
I got myself a used Smiths GP RCV 1002/00F tacho for my Mini 998. I have tried it on both Points and Electronic Ingition, and it works, however in both cases when you get to about 4000rpm, the needle can jump around about 1000rpm, back and forth.
It doesnt do it all the time, but most of the time it does, but only up near that rev range. Everywhere else in the rev range, its buttery smoth and lovely.
I have changed the wiring, and its all solid, and new. Power and GND for the tach goes into the speedo cluster and onto solid power and gnd contacts, and then the signal wire runs to the front of the car and onto the -ve post of the coil, alongside the wire to the distributor.
I had assumed the ignition system was generating too much noise and the tacho was struggling to distinguish what the pulses were, but changing from points to electronic (Power Spark) it still does the same sort of thing.
I have an IR camera temp gun thing which shows you the heat output of the area you are looking at, great for finding if water is flowing and getting hot etc. When I get near the engine bay with that, the screen starts glitching. So something is generating some nasty noise.
Any suggestions as to what might cure this?
I have swapped distributors as I mentioned, I have also swapped coils. Next to try is ignition leads, but hmm.
Thanks
