Had to go into town in the Mini today as my wife had the BMW.

It's OK on the open road, but the 286 cam, SCCR gearbox and SC drops are far from ideal in any sort of traffic.

still, it was nice to drive it.

I believe people hear those horrible SC drop gears, which are definitely being removed and replaced with helical ones at next engine rebuild, and think the transmission is about to break up.

It really is not a good local road car at all. If it was going to be used regularly in traffic I would build another 'S' engine with a 266 cam and a standard ratio gearbox as that would be much nicer to drive. Mine is really only at home flat out on narrow tarmac lanes against the clock with the tacho wound round to between 5000 & 6500 rpm.

What happened was that I was doing the 'Carpetbagger Rally' and 26 miles from the end of the 200 mile event we were leading the Historic cars and were lying 5th overall against all the moderns. Then the drop gears broke up. They were helicals, but had done 29 rallies.

I was so disappointed that I decided to fit SC drops. After fitting them I realised that I needed ear plugs when not wearing a crash helmet and that it had spoiled the car for any sort of normal road use. Before that, although it whined in the intermediate gears it was acceptable and in top it was not over noisy.

They are fine on the race track where they enable easy changes to the overall FDR and helmets are always worn. That horrible whining noise is something I'll never miss, any more than I miss my late mother-in-law's whining about everything ;D .
