I have a 1995 Jap export SPi with air-con.

The air-con relay - part number YWB101080 - has failed (intermittent operation, clicks on/off very rapidly and makes the engine rev)

This part is no longer made or, it seems, available second hand - does anyone know if you can replace it with a more modern or different Rover relay?

Can relays be fixed?

Thanks for any help!

O

If you search the part number on Rimmer Bros website, it should bring up any alternatives.

Tried Rimmer Bros - unfortunately it's just listed as "no longer available", with no alternative given... :-(

I think you asked this already in March ?
You will be best off getting it repaired if you cannot source one secondhand.
The relays are normally quite simple open frame type, so someone with good electronics/auto electrical experience should be able to replace the faulty units on the board.
These units usually fail due to corrosion or cracking of the solder joints onto the circuit board (inside the black box), so it might be worth having it cleaned up and the joints remade.

Thanks Flying Scot - I thought I'd revisit it to see if there was another relay I could use as I've had no joy getting the actual one!

I've been offered a YWB10009, which looks very similar and is a multi-purpose Rover relay - is it worth trying it or will I fry my electrics by using the wrong type?

If that's a no-no I'll have to look into getting the current one repaired.

You need to get a circuit diagram of how that relay works, then you can work out what relay or relays are needed. I have a Jap with air also so maybe I should look into this also.

Well it's a Japanese Mini with airconditioning, I wonder if Google will find a diagram, possibly in pdf format?

Looks easily repairable, or replaceable with separate relays.

Thanks Ethel - but I tried that, nothing!

And thanks firstforward - I put my details in, I'll see if anything comes back.

Well, assuming the diagrams are right and my eyes are not deceiving me, there are no obvious electrical differences between the MPI relay and the later Japanese SPI. Checkout pages 16 and 18 of the following PDF:

Update - I finally fished out the offending relay module (having discovered its hiding place behind the dash!).

And it's not a YWB 101080 after all! It's a YWB 10009-H. I took the PCB out of the module box and soldered what looked like some bad connections to the solenoids, put it back in, started the car and it behaved perfectly.

So I went to bed happy.

Drove to work this mornng in the sunshine, turned on the air-con.... "click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click!!!"

:xxx:

I've ordered a new relay off ebay - the YWB 1009-H seems to be a lot more common - here's hoping it'll do the trick!

I got confused. Per the Somerfordmini catalogue, the YWB101080 is the air conditioning relay for the 97 and later Japanese Minis. For some weird reason Mini spares shows it as the substitute of the YWB100970 (for engine management on the MPI) for 97 and later Japanese Minis.

http://www.minispare...px|Back to shop

So it looks like the correct relays per Somerfordmini are:

YWB10020 RELAY, with bracket, air conditioning 1994-96; air conditioned models (Japan).

YWB10022 RELAY, engine management              1991-96; fuel injected models.

YWB101080 RELAY, air conditioning                    1997 on; air conditioned models (Japan).

YWB100970 RELAY, engine management            1997 on.

http://www.somerford...page=page&id=88

The YWB10020 seems to be in stock in Somerfordmini but is out of stock from Minispares:

http://www.minispare...c/YWB10020.aspx

I could not find the YWB10020 in the Heritage publications.
