Fitted the new relay and clicking has persisted - but only when the temperature/compressor rotary switch is turned to a point where the thermostat might decide to switch the compressor on or off (if I turn it to full "coldness" it's OK).

To me this would suggest that it's the air-con thermostat that's the problem - any thoughts?

Are you sure that you have the right relay for the car? If it is 1995 model then the relay is supposed to be the this one:

It's a bit confusing, xrocketengineer - it should be the one you mentioned, but in my car it's not - it's a relay module that looks like a white plastic version of the ECU relay. The relay module in mine, which had worked fine until recently and I replaced, is a YMB 1009.

Maybe there's a YWB10020 relay in there somewhere as well?! Who knows with Rover....

I did find a Japanese web site telling of a Mini behaving exactly the same and (by struggling through Google Translate) it seems to suggest that they replaced the thermostat (which is also not made/available any more!) and that sorted the problem...

I have a 1997 Rover Mini that I am having the same issues with the compressor cycling on and off. Just wondering if anyone has found out what causes this or where to get the YWB101080 relay?

I forgot, can you advise exactly where this relay is and how do I access it.

On the rhs of the car (which would be the drivers side in Japan ) next to the bonnet pull you will find it. It tucked up next to the dash rail.

When I had this problem it turned out to be the air-con thermostat, which is hidden behind the dash on the passenger side.

I had hell's own job getting a replacement - eventually a friend of a friend who lives in Japan ordered me one from a Japanese website (which was in Japanese and wouldn't ship outside Japan) and they had to buy it for me and send it to me direct.

If you only get the clicking when the thermostat is on the cusp of turning on or off because the temperature is correct, I'd suspect this rather than the relay.

Did you find a part number for the thermostat?

You indicated the that you had someone send you a thermostat from Japan. Did it resolve your problem when you installed the new thermostat. What do you need to do to access the thermostat, remove the old and install the new one. Lastly did the thermostat have a part number that you could share with me?
