Hey,

Just wondering if anyone has converted the stock subframe to a single beam type? if so how did you do it and what, if any did you do or modify to the subframe ie; Strengthening, extra mounting points, or what to do with the mounts on the side that can twist?

Pics would also help..

I have coilovers in my car at present and I have a spare subframe that I would like to convert for some weight reduction and free up some room under the boot without actually modifying the boot..

Appreciate the feedback..

I made my own beam from a length of box section (quite similar to the alloy one Minispares flog). It's bolted directly to the heelboard with M10's, two each end and otwo either side of the exhaust tunnel, but that's on a plaggy kit car. Little, if any, more work than modding a subby and likely to last much longer.

rearbeambronze01.GIF A bit agricultural grade, if you're after saving weight, but the dimensions should be useful.

It's easier just to buy a rear beam from somebody (KAD, mini spares, TDK, force racing)

These just bolt on and use your original radius arms.

Worth pointing out that the Midas rear track is narrower than on a Mini.

You'd have to compare the 1222 dimension with the same dimension on the Mini subframe, and just adapt the measurements to suit. You'll have to change the fixing holes too.

Not sure who's beam this one was

That looks like a huge difference Artsu, I just made mine as a replacement off the one that was on my Midas, but I'd be surprised if it's that much different to a Mini, comparing it with the front end. Of course there are no trunions  and a different sill profile.

It must be the photo. Those are both dimensionally the same, the standard Midas one with one similar to the one you made. I think the track difference is about 2 inches compared to a Mini.

Perhaps someone out there would be so kind as to make a comparison with a Mini subframe if they have one knocking about?

I'll just add that I've yet to see a beam replacement subframe that is a simple bolt on job on a Mini. They all seem to have issues that need sorting.

Alan on the Midas forum has a very interesting design that could be of benefit, it just needs fine tuning a little.

Actually, we've had topics with Mini suspension dimensioning diagrams in the past. There should be enough info to compare.

I'm sure there are others too.
