Thanks ste3po mate, I was not questioning your great advise re timing and how to do it, was just double checking it's the best and easiest way as get a bit scarred of electrics and tweaking things without double checking :-)

I am going to have a cup of tea and go for it I think!

Thx again mate!

That's no problem! I'd be doing the exact same as you!

I'm in the same boat with tweaking things... obviously don't want to make things worse, but things usually turn out pretty well, I have found it is all about the confidence behind what you are doing, plus when you start fixing problems there will be no stopping you!

Good Luck, let us know how you get on!

Have I just answered this in another post ? O_O

Fastest idle by turning the distributor will cause engine pinking and detonation, use a timing light if you dont have one use someone who has is my advice, it will save money time and more importantly grief!

As said this is nothing perfect nor will it give the best results. Have never experienced what you describe Kernow (But maybe I was just lucky). After fitting my new distributor and setting up the advance how I explained above, I probably drove it every day for well over a month, then had the engine tuned and timed 'professionally' (As by then I had the money to get it done properly.

I am no expert, as said more of a 'newbie' but if done carefully and not rushed then such a change should not cause significant issues. But again as said best to get it done professionally (tuning, timing and all that) when you can =]
