Mad as a hatter is a phrase for people who are nuttier than squirrel poo.

I hope this helps to clarify?

Taking the Alice in Wonderland reference would be good, but I bet you wouldn't be the only one. The phrase comes from the use of mercury  by hatters, to smooth felt, that poisoned their nervous system. "The Hatters" is also the knickname of Luton Town AFC & Eric Morecambe was their most famous fan. You might find an idea their.

Turning up as a mini enthusiast would probably be quite accurate. We are all nuts.

You will get the Alice in Wonderland references when you do a search because of a scene in the film/book called the Mad Hatter's Tea party. You could dress up as the white rabbit or if you are feeling brave dress up as Alice. This would work especially well if you are a bloke.

As Ethel says the phrase "Mad as a hatter" comes from the days when mercury was used by hatters and they didn't realise that it gives off fumes that cause neurological damage over prolonged exposure. As a result many of them had problems and since the condition and the reason behind it wasn't understood they were simply labelled as "mad" and it was more common amongst hatters.

Alice-in-Wonderland included a character called the mad hatter (yes played by Johnny Depp in the film) so you'll get lots of Alice references.

As for what to dress up as..... If it's meant like a tarts and vicars party then you'll probably see all the guys dressed like the hatter from Alice and the women dressed as one of the female characters (Alice, the Queen of Hearts etc.). Failing that they just want something "crazy".

To me, mad as hatters gives you carte Blanche to dress up as the silliest, maddest thing you can think of.

My mum went to a fancy dress party recently and the theme was 'the sea'

She went in her pyjamas as a 'kipper' get it?

She is mad as a hatter, like me.....

I once had to go to a party and the theme was something beggining with L and/or R as it was a joint birthday for two girls called Lucy and Rachel.

My mate Tim (who is white) went as Lionel Richie.

I went as a Red Lego Brick.

I still get people coming up to me when I am out in the pub asking if I am the lego brick guy.

That's really cool. Were you not brave enough to go the whole hog and paint your face yellow and wear a shiny black wig? :D
