Ok so I want to get some new alloys/tyres from my 1989 mini. currently on 12" very tatty painted alloys.

Im going to 10" cause I love the chunkier tyre look, and am getting the brakes reduced soon to allow me to do that.

im totally lost though as to what im looking for in terms of wheels.. Ive been trawling the TMC 10 inch wheel thread and see what I like and dont like. but Im confused about offsets and deep dish and max widths, etc.

Ok so I dont mind my original plastic arches - as a push Id change for those more shaped ones with a lip ? but dont like those massive thick plastic arches I see around.

whats the legality of how much a wheel /tyre can stick out past the arch ? Im getting some mixed responses when Ive asked before ... some say NOTHING! some say a few mm's .. and some have same like an inch? I see lots of minis with a cheeky amount of tyre popping beyond the arch and I quite like that look.

deep dish - is this when the hub-part? is closer to the inside edge of the wheel - meaning the wheel sticks out loads from the car ?

anyway - offsets .. how can I judge what a wheel it going to look like ? can I measure something? if I go to a mini show and see some wheels I like - can I estimate what they will fit like.

also (and finally) , what kind of width can I get up to before Im going to struggle ? I always imagines something like a 5.5 , lots seem to be using 6's , I wouldnt want anything over a 6. but a 5 seems too narrow? though someones said Id struggle to fit tyres to a 5.5 or 6 ?

its a green mini - and I 'was' originally thinking something like a revolite black? but since seen anthracite minilite types ? aaagghhhh I dunno :(

When looking down on the tyre, you shouldn't be able to see any tread at all. That's what the law says.

There's a thread in the FAQs on here about offsets etc.

I was running 10x6 Force splits for a while with standard arches and only a slight bit of poke! They look awesome with standard arches! I'm not a fan of any other arches so was well chuffed. The offset of the original rim is 15, think that'll be changed now though with the big dishes?...

this is my Mk3 (1978) with the std. black plastic arches & 5x10's.

nice stance & tyre/wheel combo and not too OTT.

The tyres are in line with the arches, but sometimes the MOT'er disagrees - have a set of 3.5's just for the test!

If you fit the ST pattern Minilites at 4.5" you won't need arch extensions at all. I have run 5" x 10" alloys on my 'S' without arch extensions and have had no problems. I can post photos if you wish of it on both 4.5" & 5" with no arch extensions.

quite liking  6x10 Weller reverse rims .. or a cooper s wheel - but 5.5 or 6 ? off-white with a chrome dome insert ?

would 6 catch the body though ? and if so whats the max wheel I can get away with without having to bend and chop the wings, etc?

that being said - I do like a nice shiny ultralite ... again 6 inch?

6x10 weller reverse rims (rather than the 8 spokes or the motorsports) are pretty hard to come by and will def need wider arches as they are intended for drum braked minis with arches.

There is no such wheel as a 5.5 or 6" cooper S wheel unless they have been banded, the max width they came/come in is 4.5" but a 4.5" reverse rim will fill the stock arches nicely on S brakes as well as having a nice bit of dish.

As to trimming your arches, general rule of thumb is if you need to change from the stock width arches, then your going to need to trim your arches

I've run reverse rims without arches, but because of the lowered stance the camber brings the top of the tyre back in under the arch... These are only 4.5J10 wheels, but with the offset for drums, hence they stick out more.

I see that you have said you are getting your brakes 'reduced', not sure what you mean by that, but unless you're converting to cooper S 7.5" disks and equivalent calipers you may be restricted on the wheels you can run, and the offsets of those wheels... A lot of 10" wheels struggle to get 'over' 7.9" disks and calipers and have to be spacered and hence big arches.

That was taken at an exhibition in California a few years ago. I guess that's what well-dressed Californians call 'formal wear'!

I built the car and it was taken to CA by my best friend who still owns it there.

Actually it might be for sale shortly. It is a fully prepared Cooper 'S' 1071 historic rally car.
