I have a very slight oil leak from the speedo drive unit on side of the gearbox - can this be fixed with the engine still in the car does anyone know please?

I think i have the same problem with my MPI. Did you change the seal?

It's unlikely to be the actual front cover which is leaking, but something which is above it... timing cover, front seal, head gasket or even the head itself as previously found out after much head scratching and head gasket changing...

If you can trace the highest point of the oil, and then you will have found your source.

I've used a UV reactive dye for such occasions, something which has never failed to find even the most illusive of oil leaks.

 

If it is the front cover, then it can be changed with the engine in the car, and fortunately on an MPi, does not necessitate the removal of the radiator, but you will be removing the engine mount and bracket so will need to support the engine, and of course drain the oil first.
