thanks for that dont suppose you no if i can buy a new one to fit on the end? and if i cant shall i just leave it as it is and try and clean it up? thanks tom

It is probably a tank liner coating.  If you go back to my first post (post #4 on page 1 of this thread) I outline the basics of cleaning the tank.  Following those steps you apply a gasoline resistant coating to the inside of the tank.  James mentioned a firm that does this in post #15.  I have used DIY kits to achieve the same.  Since it is basically a painting process for the inside of the tank, the same caveat applies.  For good paint results, spend a lot of time and effort on the preparation.  Of the kits I have used, the POR kit mentioned by Andy in post #11 is the one I prefer.  They have a motorcycle tank kit that is just right for the Mini and it includes all the materials you will need.  POR is sold through Frost.co.uk   However, coating a tank isn't required unless it is leaking so you may want to put that off tank lining until it is necessary.

thanks mate i am going to be using your method of nuts inside the tank and i am going to put petrol in side and then rinse it out with petrol. ino then nothing else has been used in the tank that could effect the engine later on...and filters.
