If you got a private pre-73 plate and fitted black and silver plates, you probably would have a better chance of getting away with it than running your newer plates.
I don't think it is worth it though, you're still committing an offence whichever way you go. You may as well just use your current plates to save some money.

Can anpr read black and silver? I thought it couldn't hence why new cars arnt supposed to have them. So if you put one onyes you probably would get away with it!

No, newer cars can't have them because they are wrong for the car and are illegal, this pre-dates the existence of ANPR by decades. It's just a paranoid rumour that the rule was made to accommodate ANPR. Older ANPR systems couldn't tell the difference, and no it couldn't read couldn't read some of the older fonts, but in many cases could still pick out the actual number. I've been telling people for years that the newer systems could tell the difference between colour and black and silver and that one day they would add it to the ANPR offences.

if your car was register after the cut off date you can not use black and silver plates. what that date is I am not aware but was ´71 last time I looked. might be rolling.....

Last legal date for B & W plates is 31st December 1972, so an 'L' registration.
I had a B & W plate on an early 1973 Innocenti, but it was built in Jan 1973 and was LHD so I didn't have any problems. The Old Bill are not likely to check out a car with an L-suffix, but an 'M' onwards will attract attention as it is clearly illegal.
But, the good news is that illegal plates are a minor breach of C & U regulations and will not attract any points on the licence, nor a big fine. One might doubt that many of the Old Bill actually know the cut-off date for B & W plates.

Well I had my black and silvers on for nearly 4 years, then on this years l2b I was pulled on the run down to brighton.
The officer told me he wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the anpr alerting him to the wrong colour for the age of the car.
Before I've ran the risk, but now after being stopped, and nearly have a fine of over £200, I don't think I'll bother.

It used to be '71 as that was the date that coloured plates originally first appeared. Around 7 years ago they consolidated all the old registration plate rules, got rid of all the different allowed styles from different eras and made black and silver line up with historic tax class. Now that the historic date is rolling again they might change the date I suppose but they haven't so far.

The coloured plates came in much earlier than '71 Dan, a friend of mine has a '65 (C reg'd) Cooper S which had them from new, they're raised black plastic digits on reflective yellow and white backing plates. The shape of the digits is subtly different to what became available later on though. Quite a novelty at the time although widespread use of them didn't kick in for a couple of years or so.
