My Dad was telling me that people, including him, swapped their 'boring' black and silver plates for the yellow ones. 

 

A bit like how today we retrofit modern stuff to our cars.

I've been running illegally spaced and illegally sized (on the front) admittedly in white and yellow but i'm yet to have a problem in about 20 months of driving and i've had police following me and been through ANPR cameras without a problem (i am based near norwich so our cameras probably wont be as good as a big city e.g. birmingham) but if the car is in good condition and you're not driving like a t**t you'll probably be fine and as above you cant get points so wouldn't be the end of the world!!
