Going to barcoat the car Saturday afternoon then prime it after an hour or so. Waa going to give a dust coat of primer then about two or three good coats. How long does it need to be left before flattening it back? Was hoping to do top coat Monday

You could do all coats in one day if warm enough and flashes off ok.

Try it after 3 hours if you're garage is reasonably warm, if the paper is clogging up then leave it for another hour. If you've got plenty of heat then you should be able to get on it sooner.

Bought a quartz halogen heater and I have a tall fan heater to. I can get the garage up to 20 degrees easy.

That'll help greatly! You should easily be able to sand back about two hours. Do a bit and see how it goes. If the paper clogs then keep the heater going and crack open a can!

I put on 4 odd coats on my clubby on Thursday but I'm not touching it until tomorrow night at the earliest. My excuse is I'm wanting the primer to shrink a bit but it's actually because I've got a lot o cans to drink!!

Surely once its dry its dry. Cant shrink much can it? Is it best left for a few days?

I always felt if you could leave it for a few days then it would be the better for it, but that's just my own feelings and wouldn't take it as law! to be honest I had to do parental duties over the weekend so had to take a few days away from her, if it wasn't for that then I would've been getting stuck into it! Also another thing to think about is that primer is moisture absorbant so the longer I leave her the more moisture the primer will soak up.

dont attempt to flatten of the primer the same day be it 1k high build or 2k high build it needs to harden and shrink fully if you topcoat it to quick it will shrink around any repairs and you will see them if you can mark the primer with your fingernail then its to soft give it a few days

Glad someone else shares my view! One of the few good things about doing a paint job for yourself and not a waiting customer is that it can be left to shrink for a few days or week/s. I'm glad I had to leave my car over the weekend or I would've gotten onto it straight away!

Barcoated yesterday afternoon. I then primed using high build cellulose primer and am happy to say that there is no reactions anywhere. Primer went on well, I did one light coat followed by three decent coats. Glad I had a respirator on. Went back out the garage after the last coat of primer was applied and the fumes were strong. Looks good so far, hopefully wet flat it Tuesday evening and paint wednedsay afternoon.
