I would like to go turbo at some stage. I suppose I could always swap heads with some one when that day comes. Can you not get thicker head gaskets to reduce the compression ratio?

I just thought while the engine was out I would stick a cam in :-)

Is there a way to check what cam is fitted at the moment without  stripping it down?

To fit a turbo-charger and be sure it will work well you should really do a complete rebuild of the engine.

You need to remember that you are working on a very old designed classic car and unless you use parts you know to be strong enough there can be very bad results.

Personally I would never fit any sort of forced induction without re-boring, fitting new Omega deep dish pistons, re-working the head to get the C.R. correct and rebuilding the bottom. To do all that means that it would be less expensive and more reliable to fit a 1275 engine and get the same or better performance without such a highly stressed engine.

The problem with all classic cars is that to get performance improvements is an expensive business which often leads to unreliability, especially if they are then driven flat out a lot of the time in an attempt to keep up with standard modern cars

With a 998 IMHO the best thing is to bore to +0.080" giving 1060 cc, fit a better well gas-flowed head, a decent induction & exhaust system and a better cam (Kent 266). Then it will give around 60 bhp which is fine for such a classic and it will go like an early Mini-Cooper.

Thanks, Ive been reading and some people say they fit the cam with the engine in place is that not quite hard? The video I watched by mini mania on youtube about fitting / setting a cam up seemed quite involved and used a degree wheel
