Hi all. After 3 days of not eating, hardly drinking, sleeping and just having the general feeling of thousands of shards of broken glass in my throat it turns out I have tonsillitis. My god is it painful. I don't really class myself as a tart but honestly I'd rather have teeth pulled then this. I thought only kids got it but no, adults can suffer too and alas I am suffering. I haven't slept for more then a couple of hours at once for the last few nights as even swallowing spit is akin to eating lava. I have been popping painkillers like smarties. The only thing that seems to help is ice cream but only for a few mins.

Just felt the need to share my pain :-(

Yeah the doctor says I have a bacterial type? And gave me some nasty red tablets which incidently seem to be covered in sand paper when swallowing...

As of yet no better and I'm all out of ice cream...

Dry toast helps scrape off bacteria and usually does some good followed by ice cream to sooth.

Send someone out for some!

Get well soon mate

the antibiotics take a day or two to kick in  as i had it a couple of months ago. I use the hot cold method, which is have something hot like tea or coffee then something cold like ice cream or a lolly or a smoothie.

toast and rough stuff is good for a sore throat as it does scrape away all the crap stuff but i dont think the combo is good for tonsillitis as it hurts too much to swallow anyway so you may want to wait a bit first.

Thanks all. Well we are out shopping in a bit because I have exhausted our supply of milk and ice cream. I find warm drinks are ok, cold, especially fizzy drinks are just torture. I tried to gargle a warm salt solution, it actually soothed my poor mouth parts beautifully but oh the taste made me want to gag. I will attempt some toast shortly but I had an omlette yesterday thinking it was nice and soft and it nearly broke me so I'm not holding much hope lol.
Thanks for all the suggestions :-)

Yes, I was told to take the anti-biotics and gargle 3 times a day with a Disprin solution, which can be swallowed as well to reduce the pain.

It sure is painful.

I haven't had tonsillitis in a long time, but I have had a swollen uvula (the bit hanging down at the back of your mouth). I don't drink enough water usually, and every now and then I wake up with it. It's not painful but it is a horrible sensation.

Get better soon.

Gargle Asprin!

I really wouldnt advise this, it's not been recommended by the medical proffesion for decades, as it often casuses localised irriattion that can make the inflammation/pain worse. Stick with taking over the counter painkillers such as Paracetamol and Ibruprofen instead, there are also Chloraseptic throat sprays available at pharmacies that contain a mild local anesthetic (usually Benzocaine). This temporarily numbs the area and can be a great relief, especially for when you need to swallow (i.e. when eating, or taking your medication)

If you must gargle with something, then use a mild saline soloution (salt water), or a chlorhexadine gluconate mouthwash instead.

I swear by the honey and lemon trick! Used to get tonsillitis a lot and always have hot water with a slice of lemon and a couple of spoons of honey. Not only does it have healing magic lol its very soothing and comforting :)

Similarly I'd also avoid the honey & lemon method too. It's OK as a remedy for the common cold (not that it really does anything other than provide a little vitamin C), but not for a bacterial infection such as tonsillitis. The acidic nature of Lemon juice is likely to irritate and cause further pain and inflammation to the area and the high sugar content of the honey is just going to provide an extra form of nutrition for the bacteria which will help them to multiply.

Soluble Aspirin, get some soluble Aspirin (as long as you're safe with Aspirin).

Gargle with that, it'll help a little.

Chloraseptic spray is also good, if a little horrible. :ermm:

Hmmm, AVV IT says not.  But I've always done it in the past.

what about alcohol? It's a good antibacterial/ antiseptic and has an aneathetising effect? Perhaps a gargle of whisky four times a day? ;-) (depending on type of antibiotic of course as some aren't good to drink with).
