I had my tonsils out in April this year, bejaysus that was painful, not the op itself but the aftermath. The spray that AVVIT mentions was the absolute best.

"what about alcohol? It's a good antibacterial/ antiseptic and has an aneathetising effect? Perhaps a gargle of whisky four times a day? ;-) (depending on type of antibiotic of course as some aren't good to drink with).

I couldn't possibly comment on the medicinal properties of alcohol, possibly because I've been self medicating with the stuff since lunchtime, in an attempt to try and alleviate the symptoms of "man flu"!!

But hey, during the Napoleonic war, they used the stuff quite successfully as both an anaesthetic and an antiseptic, in order to amputate peoples limbs. So I'd definitely give it a go! (Of course I'd be forced to swallow the stuff after gargling with it though, purely for hygiene reasons obviously!)

An amputation and a hangover to top it off!

I struggle enough with hangovers on their own....

Ah yes, but that's probably because you haven't amputated any limbs whilst under the influence. Were you to hack an arm, or leg off each time you'd had one too many, then I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't even notice your hangover the next day. You probably wouldn't want to use that as a hangover remedy more than three times though, and defiantly not more than four!

Thanks for the ideas chaps, well I thought about the alcohol but the silly little book that comes xwith the tablets advises against it...
Still tempted ;-)

Well anyway its Monday morning and I'm still laid up with no end in sight. So now to add to the misery of my throat I'm losing money too. The tablets said 48 hours and this is now day 3 on them so I'm hoping they start working soon. If not I will have to 'self medicate' and have a hang over to take my mind off my throat....

Yeah probably best avoid the alcohol then. At best it can stop anti biotics from working, at worst it can also have quite a severe reaction with them as well, which is the last thing you need on top of being laid up and feeling like crap. Rest assured that they're probably working already though, it just takes 2-3 days for them to eliminate enough of the infection for you to notice an actual improvement in symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon

You never know if the anti-biotic is going to work anyway.

I have found that the last few years, prescription drugs are being swapped for cheap less effective versions supplied in plain white boxes.

I know someone with IBS who was taking a drug called Colofac which kept it under control until it was swapped for one named Mebeverine which although is the actual name of the Colofac drug was just a cheap version of it and had no effect on the IBS at all.

They had a big struggle with the doctors to have the prescription changed back to the Colofac.

How's the Tonsillitis now?

At least the anti biotics are finally kicking in, I may finally get a decent night sleep tonight lol :-)
