I've finally found and bought a 1275gt. Its a 1980 on a W plate. Its a project so it's going to need a lot of work but I wondered if anybody could tell me a few things.

It's fitted with a Britax sunroof and I'm unsure if it's factory or an aftermarket job? Were Britax fitted to any GT's in the factory?

Also the motor that comes with it appears to be an A plus motor which may mean it's a metro replacement. But I've read over on the mini register that the very last 1980 GT's were fitted with the A plus motor,is this correct?

I haven't got it yet so I can't check it in person.

Any info would be great.

Cheers
Kris

I understand that some late GT'S had an a+ wngine of block/parts

What is the engine number - that should determine if it could be original

There is also a lot of good 1275GT info here:-

http://forum.minicoo...-gt/-1275-gt-aa

The Britax sunroof would be aftermarket or possibly dealer fitted, what type is it as nice 'in period' accesories can be worth keeping even if you want to keep it near standard factory spec.

I'm just waiting for the serial number from the owner.

Yes the Britax sunroof is definitely period. The car hasn't been used for nearly 20 years and then owner has known the car to have a sunroof for a lot longer.

I've done a quick car check and it was first registered on 11/09/80

And the engine number should be -32070

I have a GT on an X plate and it has an A+ engine in it and was like that from the factory. It also has a britax sunroof fitted from new by the dealer.

There's some 1979/80 20th anniversary specials with an A+ 1100.

Only from what I've read, but they ploughed loads of money developing the A plus motor in 79/80 and started putting it into the end of the line 1275gt's from 1980 just before the Metro arrived.

We actually started getting A+ Engines out here factory fitted from around September 1979, mind you I'd say these were early production ones and they were still ironing out the bugs, they all seem to have exectionally poor machining geometry to them and even just poor machining. The Cranks were from the earlier engines though.

The A+ officially appeared with the launch of the Metro in 1980 when a big publicity splash was made about how much money (£30 million) BL had invested in upgrading and refining the A-Series. In reality I it was to deflect some of the criticism and disappointment of the motoring press and public that the ancient A-series engine and gearbox with only 4-speeds was carried over from the Mini. However the base models of some other competitor supermini hatchbacks like the Ford Fiesta were also using relatively ancient pushrod engines with 4 speed boxes but higher up the range OHC with 5-speeds was fast becoming the norm.
