Have in the past had the same problem.  I have done two things that have vastly improved my plight.

  1. Fitted wind deflectors and run with one, if not both windows opened an inch or so.
  2. Re-fitted the dash mounted fresh air vents after a previous owner had removed them for speakers.

Also run with the air directed at the screen, even if the fan isn't on.

Agree with the comments about not wiping the windows.  We went to a gig last week in a friends car; he and his wife routinely demist their car with a grubby old cloth.  It would appear they rarely use their heater, even on low. The result was that on a cold November evening all the windows had streams of condensation running down them, leading to more wiping and even more condensation.

I have a mini spares heated front screen which I fitted last year. Really helps clear the screen, flick it on for 5 mins and the bog standard heater keeps it clear. The side windows still steam up a touch but I keep a shammy in the door pocket and give it a little wipe, once the motor has warmed up properly it does eventually clean the side windows. Also I have no fresh air vents.

Its not as good as a modern car but its not a modern car lol

What heated screen have you got? My heater clears the screen from cold in less than 5mins?!

More of a figure of speech... Takes about 20 or 30 seconds, if that. My screen was frozen over this morning, by the time I scraped off the door windows it was totally defrosted and clear.
Excellent bit of kit :-)

I've heard that if you wipe the inside of the screen with washing up liquid from a dry cloth this can be very effective. Also a potato cut in half wiped over the screen works a treat too. I've never tried either of these personally.

Had me worried, I'm getting myself a heated screen next weekend but was having second thoughts if they take 5mins to clear!

No I bought the 'invisible' screen, the one like the fords have, and its as good as the one on my focus and the ST. It does draw a lot on your alternator so I would recommend an up rated one if yours is standard. Although I have a standard alt and it still works fine, just the headlamps are a bit dimmer while its on. Other than that I highly recommend it. ;-)

I'm just about the only one that will recommend wiping the widows to begin with, but then I do use a microfiber/sports towel that's washed regally and not left in the car if its damp.

But then for the last few years my heated rear window just doesn't work, so I can't even keep my hands warm when pushing it if I breaks down. But even so it seams to clear pretty quickly on its own. As what I do is clean the windows with cheap old window cleaner regularly, drive with the drivers window open a inch (otherwise it rattles if its fully closed) only have the heater knob pushed in once the engine is warm and the heater flap set to screen.

Another big help though, is sealing up all the joins in the plastic y demister vents and hose joins with duct tape.

Seem to have warm air now but by no means really hot. Should I take the valve off and clean it? If so is it easy job?

Also the air direction doesn't seem great, may have to take off dash and put some ducting in place.

I've followed the below guide but no hot air now, wonder if I should flush the matrix once more?

I have just flushed my matrix (was very dirty water) and also checked the valve. The valve is fine and I can feel the pipe on the other side of the valve is hot, also the pipe in the car going into the matrix is hot (near drivers feet). But I am getting no hot air from the vents, please can anyone advise?

Is the return pipe from the matrix hot as well?

Yeah, return pipe is hot. Seems I need a new matrix, going to get this and swap it over I think:
