Ok. you are right. I have not thougt of the ECU inner parts!

You can also get metal coated catalysts which are much firmer if you ground with the exhaust. But giving the cleaning a try is worthwhile to do.

 

But before risking an engine damage and/or a MOT-failure I would buy a new one. Good quality with seals and screws start from 91 Euro.

its running a lot better..can i see if the cat is knackered? It doesnt rattle when shaken.

 

You won't kill the cat from running rich, but you will have sooted it up. Unless a cat's core has started to disintegrate / rattle, don't buy a new cat until you've spent 5 minutes cleaning your old one. 

 

I used Gunk Green the last time I rinsed a cat as I was trying to be cautious. It worked perfectly, but if it's too cold to be mucking about outside, blast a can of brake cleaner through it. (VOCs won't hurt it as that's what it's designed to come into contact with).
