Yes mate if you have a vacuum balancer then fine, if your car is used on the road a vacuum unit is a must it will drive better on a light throttle with more torque and return more mpg.

Ok good. Will put the uni-syn to the test tomorrow just to see where it's at.

I figured as much with the vacuum as I'm really only seeing some problems when I'm casually getting around town. With the engine mods I have, am I restricted to only a yellow aldon dizzy w/ vacuum (I think they exisit) or are there other dizzies that would fit the bill? I would like to move to an electric ign anyway so hoping I can find an alternative here in Canada.

The Aldon Ignitor is a pricey little bit. The chaps at MiniMania suggested 45d Electronic With Powermax Red Rotor Arm as a drop in replacement. Any faith in that suggestion? Would be cheaper than the parts to mod the Aldon... though who can beat Aldon...

Twins should be fine....on reading the title though, I was initially thinking you had a single hs4

Sorry bad advice from Minimania the 45d wont have anything like the right curve, if you buy a Vac advance unit for the Aldon yellow and a Powersparks kits £30 your sorted and a far better distributor than a off the shelf.

Twin HS4s is fine

Ok, I figured as much about the curve. I asked them and they said it would be just fine but I was skeptical.

I think this would be the Powerspark kit:

But confused about this one:

Are those essentially the same thing?? Quite a price gap.

Not finding much for the vac advance addon... their website is pretty clunky. Do I just need to call them, which I think you suggested in another post...

Thanks!

Use 'air tool oil' in a cold climate for the dashpots.

Yes just ring Aldon for the Vac Advance unit

The more expensive one is indeed the Aldon Igniter kit and the other one is the same thing, the difference is development and marketing, where as the cheaper unit is made somewhere in the far east, even so they have proven to be reliable with only a couple reporting issues which were quickly sorted, just remember to check the timing after fitting due to the difference in the points heal and  the hall effect trigger point.

Good idea. A bit easier to find around here.  The problem with where I live, for example, just this week the temp was sunny and 12C one day and -2C the next, and today back up to 8C and pouring rain.

What is that hose for that connects the two carbs?? Seems illogical to me.

For twin HS4s the AAA swing needles are a pretty good starting point. Very similar profile to the number 7 fixed needle which was supplied by BL in their Special Tuning twin HS4 set in the early-mid 70's.

Would recommend taking a close look at the dashpot springs and the damper. For your set-up I think the blue springs will work best - reds are likely to make it way too rich.

For the dampers the twin HS4s normally use the AUC8114, rather than the AUC8103. If you look on the top of the black plastic damper cap you should find the numbers.

Thanks for that. I have been debating what type of needle to get and wasn't sure if the swinging AAA would be appropriate. The ones in there I would guess are 14yrs old but from what in told there has only been 100-200km on the engine since it was put in.

I got my uni-syn yesterday so for grins I checked the current state and they were off a fair bit. Also noticed in doing the piston check, one of the pistons only raises about 1/2 the hight as the other one. But for mixture test it seems good. Rev very briefly and returns to idle.

I'm wondering that what the affect that piston is going to have during driving conditions? That carb when I got the car was complely bunged up with old hardend gas. The shop took it all apart and cleaned it up but seems like there is still something amiss inside.

I'll pick up some springs and needles anyway as they were something I was planning on replacing.

Any thoughts what the tube is for that is running between the two carbs?

Putting a short length of rubber pipe between the two 'brass breathers' is easier than blocking them off if you are not connecting them to crankcase breather. Thats possibly why it is there, should not affect carb operation or balance.

ahh ok. I thought they might be breathers, but also figured it'd be counter productive to breath into one another.

thanks
