As far as I'm aware, nothing says what material the plates should be constructed off. I could be wrong.

Some are not made to the correct standards.

I've been through one of those VOSA traps before (where they randomly pick cars and go to town inspecting them for scratched paint and over-full ash-trays)
Didnt have a problem with my pressed plates - as long as your not using black plates on a newer car you should be fine (not fined)

They are. Its the ones where folk have VAG cars and then fit Euro Style plates that aren't :)

Please be aware that the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency ( DVLA ) has been dealing with an increased number of enquiries dealing with raised lettering or metal number plates. DVLA,s position is that there is nothing in the British Standard ( BS AU 145d) or in the Road Vehicles ( Display of Registration Marks ) Regulations 2001 that specifically excludes raised lettering or metal plates.
Although pressed metal plates are not excluded, the plate must not be treated in any way which impairs its recognition by a camera and film or any device. The Font must not be altered from the specified Charles Wright Font.
I think this pretty much closes the case.

They can be legal if they comply to all the regulations.
It won't stop some police from giving you a fine though as most apparently aren't aware. I got a fine for mine back in 2008. I wrote to them explaining that they weren't illegal and they cancelled it.

The Police cannot 'give you a fine'. They can never give anyone a 'fine'. The only way a fine can be legally imposed is by a court of law within the U.K.
The Police can believe that an offence may have been committed and offer a 'Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty'. If the accused accepts and believes that they have committed the alleged offence and is willing to pay a sum they can then avoid going to court and possibly having a fine imposed. There is no requirement to accept a COFP and everyone has the absolute right to their 'day in court'.

Slightly pedantic?
My point was a day in court wasn't necessary. A letter was sufficient to get the 'fine' cancelled.
