It should be noted by anyone considering buying these that even the pressed plates that claim to be tested and legal haven't been and possibly aren't. The tests were done in Germany by a standards body not recognised in the UK, although apparently to UK standards. Whatever DVLA say, it is the position of the Police that these plates are OK until somebody goes to court and it is proven otherwise. At the moment they are in limbo, not legal and not illegal. Some Police assert that plates have to be plastic whilst others don't, and one day one of them will meet someone who is stubborn enough to want to go to court over it and then we will have an answer. The pressed plates need to be tested by the British Standards Institute before they can be claimed fully legal and that has not happened as it's very expensive. Even buying a copy of the text of the standard to compare them against yourself is expensive.
Hmm.. so why has the uk had them since the 70's, my workmates Chevette still wears its original plates?. The sets I've has over the years are all Bs stamped and legal...

Pre 1973 then the original Metal pressed or metal with plastic numbersletters are legal if original.
replacement plates must comply with current regislation.
German style pressed plates are not legal. 1 wrong typeface, 2 not reflective.
what gets the Cops is this part of the rules with UK pressed plates (made to current rules)
be made from a reflective material
and most are not able to understand that if the plate background is reflective it is legal.
but then many were not around when we had non reflective plates.

New plates need to meet current rules. As long as they are the right size colour and font. And have the BS mark on them there Is nothing a police officer can do about that.
