Okay so I'm taking a car off the road and I still have some tax remaining on it.

I know before this new system was in place you had to fill out a form (V14?) and send it with your tax disc to the DVLA and they will issue you a refund for the remaining full months.

Is this still the case? I have heard that the DVLA will automatically issue a refund when I make a SORN now.

Any experience/thoughts appreciated.

Thought that was the case.

I've made a SORN and they confirmed that a refund will be automatically sent to my address for any remaining months of tax.

I had moved my Rover off the drive on to the kerb opposite and some scroat has reported it to the DVLA. This has resulted in me getting a fixed penalty fare of £50 if paid before mid January. It also prompted me to sort out the SORN, and I will get 5 months tax back, at approximately £75. They shot themselves in the foot as I wasn't going to both getting the tax back.

I absolutely hate neighbours like that. I accept I was in the wrong (in truth I completely forgot about this new stupid insurance rule). However, it was obviously my car and if it was a problem for someone, they could have just asked me to move it. I will now put the Rover on the drive and park the Focus there instead, for as long as I can. I do have space on the grass but that is already a bit damaged from tyres.

What did they report you for if the car was taxed ? Hence the refund ? Or have I missed something

Assuming no insurance under the continuous enforcement rules they introduced. If its taxed, it should be insured.

You can check on askmid if a vehicle is insured.....so pretty easy for a neighbour to dob you in.

As Jordie has said. I switched the insurance to the Focus. I know I'm in the wrong, but its more because I completely forgot about the rule change rather than deliberately not doing it. The fixed penalty will be covered by the tax refund and enough extra for another Christmas present, but its the damn principle of the neighbour. I have no way of knowing which one it was either!

I have now declared it SORN and will be moving it on to the drive - but the key fob battery is dead just to add to it and the immobiliser won't deactivate to move the damn thing! It has a flat tyre which makes it a bit more tricky. I might use the Focus to very gently nudge it into place!

How do you know it was a neighbour who reported it though? Bedfordshire Police do operate ANPR camera cars/vans and regularly drive them around housing estates to catch untaxed/uninsured cars. I saw one in Biggleswade only yesterday, and that was driving in and out of every cul-de-sac off the street I was parked in. Ultimately if you have an untaxed or uninsured vehicle that's not on private property, then it's really only a matter of time until you get caught.

It may have been a neighbour but agree with AVV IT, for the last 2/3 weeks I've seen an ANPR camera van everyday come up our culdesac and going around the local shopping ctr car parks. Big thing about "catching" uninsured drivers in Northamptonshire at the minute, as well as blocking a lane off twice a week on one of the busiest roads going into Northampton town ctr to stop every car for a breathaliser test!

I've no problem paying the fine it was my mistake. And you might be right about the ANPR car I guess. Even if it was a neighbour there is nothing I can do.

I didn't realise you were in Biggleswade area Avv It.

Wait I'm confused. I'm not using my Civic at the moment as recently bought a MINI to replace it. The Civic still has 8 months MOT, Tax till April, but cancelled the insurance when bought the MINI about a month ago. So is that alright? Or do I HAVE too sorn it as no insurance?...

If that is the case then that is so dumb
I thought I'd keep it taxed then if I need it for whatever reason, then all I'd need to do is insurance it and good to go in that. Instead of pissing about buying tax again too!

You do not need to insure your vehicle if it is kept off the road and declared as off the road (SORN). This rule is called ‘continuous insurance enforcement’.

If not, you could:

  • get a fixed penalty of £100
  • have your vehicle wheel-clamped, impounded or destroyed
  • face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum fine of £1,000

You will also still have to pay for your insurance on top of any fines received.

Yes you do need insurance. Just park it up and declare it SORN. If they want to make stupid rules get the money back from them.

Pointless rule. Rather keep it taxed just in case need it (obviously after insure it again)

And will always buy tax outright instead of that monthly option so know it's out the way, such a PITA, as knowing my luck, will probably need it soon and will have to faff about with taxing again!
