Right, to finalise all of this, I have split the top ball joint and the driveshaft slipped out of the pot joint with no trouble. Here was the problem. I brought new CV's, driveshafts (Minispares monte type), but in reading the description, they say that the large clip is obsolete as it is welded to the driveshafts. What I didn't realise, is that the small retaining clip does not come with the driveshafts, which is still required, and this allowed the centre of the CV joint to slide off the splines, further into the pot, meaning loss of drive. Simon from Minispares very kindly and helpfully is going to put 4 in the post this afternoon because there's a good chance there won't be any on the outer CV's either at that rate. Seems a shame £144 worth of driveshafts don't include something as inexpensive but important as this already on them.

Still, hopefully that'll be that problem sorted! Thanks again all!

Those drive shafts are virtually unbreakable.

Ok so I'm going to crawl into a corner and beat myself.... The driveshafts were in the wrong way round, so they weren't actually able to clip into the inner pot joint because the splines aren't long enough. They should've been in the outer CV. Unfortunately, having built from scratch, I didn't take the "old" car apart to have reference for which way round they should have been.

All I can hope is that I've saved someone else the headscratching I've caused myself for the past three days.

Sorry and thank you all!

Things happen in life and this one if them, we all learn by our mistakes and this happens to be one of them. The main thing is no damage was done, you are ok, the car is ok just your ego slightly bruised. Now you can get in your car and enjoy it. ( no doubt as in all thing mini something will pop up to throw a spanner in the works!!!!!)

And there's now a thread on here that people can search for if they ever have a similar issue.  So in some ways, maybe you've helped others out too :D

I believe I've had exactly this problem -- new build, lost drive on the highway to my final inspection to get license plates for the car. I'll be going under there tonight to confirm. I'll also have to double-check that my driveshafts aren't backwards.

Just about to fit driveshafts to the van; we'll be double-checking for the right orientation. Thanks for the heads-up, Goacher!

Okay, so I got the drive shaft out tonight, and it doesn't seem that I have the backwards problem. The driveshaft just fell out of the pot joint; I did have part of a broken circlip still in the drive shaft, so it's not that I forgot the circlip.

I think my issue here is that I have the C-BTA1264 drive shaft. It lists needing the 37H8706 circlips which I do have. However, looking closer at the parts diagram, it seems like I also need the 7H8597 clip as well. However, that's no longer available.

I emailed Ivan at minispares yesterday to confirm, and he said that driveshaft would only need the 4x 37h8706 clips. However, when I pull on the driveshaft, it clearly has about half an inch that it can slide in and out of the outer cv joint.

Am I missing something? Why did my driveshaft pull out of the pot joint?

And as a second note, it looks like the splines in the pot joint where the drive shaft mates with it, are isolated from the fragile parts of the pot joint? The reason I ask is that as far as I can tell, only part of the circlip came out with the drive shaft. How hard do I need to go digging for the rest of the clip?

Got another note from Ivan; they say that 2A7352 is a replacement for that clip. Going to give it a try, will update.
