If the speedo is moving, the diff will be moving.
Try it again but this time get someone to look into the engine bay and look if one of the drive shafts is spinning.
Not necessarily, the speedo is driven off the mainshaft not the diff. If the pinion has come off its splines, or broken up, then the speedo will still be driven when the diff isn't.

Can you get the engine into gear with the engine off? If so try pushinf the car and zee of the engine rotates.
Also jack up the front wheels to and (in gear) move 1 and see of the other moves/turns, if not :broken diffpin
