I have got hold of an LED brake light, to act as a third higher up brake light and I'm not sure how to wire it in.

Does anyone know how to wire in a third high level brake light in a mk1 mini?

I've read a few things, and can't work it out.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

All an LED brake light needs is a live from the current brake light circuit (pick a feed from the drivers side brake), plus an earth (screw into the body).

My question would be; why do you want to spoil a mk1 with this LED light...?

I thought as much, but it doesn't seem to work, will look again tomorrow.

It is a covert LED, I will post pictures once I get it working and see what you think.

One thing worth mentioning is that LEDs are polarity sensitive unlike normal lamps so they have to be connected the right way round

Surely better to fit an LED high level brake light (covert if possible) than to be rear ended and written off by a modern car as so many Mini's have been in recent years. Most modern car drivers just don't notice the low down tiny rear brake lights on something like a Mk1 Mini.  Also if you have ever suffered a rear end  collision in traffic as i have, even at low speed the resulting whiplash neck injuries or effects are not pleasant and sometimes permanent. Not helped either by old style seats with no head restraints.

Your also assuming an impatient white van or large 4x4 will never tailgate or sit so close, as to no be able to see the standard brake lights.

I've had a couple of close calls, so I'm also thinking about additional brake lighting, LED's make a lot of sense due to size and power consumption.

I've recently swapped the standard bulbs in my 3rd brake light for led bulbs and have noticed with the lower current draw, the 3rd brake light does come on just slightly before the standard brake lights.

I've got a high mount light from my grandpa's old business.. I tend to find following Mk1 minis that the difference between rear parking lights and brake lights isn't that obvious some of the time. Last thing you'd want is to be rear ended as people have mentioned!

I've been trying to think of a way of doing high level light(s) to my estate, can't hit on a nice way of doing it though.

I found the problem, was a bad earth, all fitted and working now and I'm very happy as you wouldn't know its there until it comes on.

I looked for ages trying to find something subtle but couldn't. So I made this from scratch, and hence you can't buy one like this, as far as I know.

Neat idea. How have you attached it and where did you source the led strip from?

A very nice colour combination if I may say.  :D Looks somewhat familiar .....
