I have a 998 engine and i was wondering if the performance would be much different if i put twin 1.5 su carb instead of a single 1.5 su carb

Its not the speed of a mini that counts, its how you get there!

Torque all the way!

And twin small carbs can liberate more torque at low RPM than a single large one and give quicker response time if setup properly. It's all about the complete tuning package, there is no 'right' answer. Guessworks only said twins don't do too well on a standard 998 engine, not that they are no good at all.

Except that you don't want to put twin 1.5" carbs on your car Only16....

Didn't you ask a couple of weeks ago about fitting a Weber instead of an SU as a simple all in one tuning solution? What were you told then? Well funnily enough the answer is still the same. Carbs don't produce more power, the engine produces the power. The carb just supplies the fuel. You need to work on the engine first.

I apologise if it wasn't you who asked the question.

You've all missed changing the cam.

If you change the cam to keep delivering power higher up the rev range you can easily get a 998 to beat a 1275 +. But it'll come at a price. Note DJH is a racer and he wont care if his car barely pulls below 4000rpm as he'll spend most of his time about 7000rpm +. Oh and that means he needs better pistons, rods and crank. Oh and serious flow work to the head, big valves and a stonking carb to feed it all.

998 big power is very expensive. Quick cheap upgrade is always the 1275, then MG Metro. Buying complete units second hand is usually the cheapest (and riskiest) option.

....But theres less fun in that ;?)

Good luck in whatever you do

At One Point I Did, They're Not Mini Based. You Have To Look Into The Specialist Motorsport Books / Suppliers To Find 'Universal' kits.

a decent stage one kit from the likes of minispares with an rc40 system made a massive difference to my girlfriends car(998 city e) and we didnt even get it on the rolling road it was a home tune job with some fine tuning on the rolling road it could have been even bettrer!

Stage one is the best idea. Its guna cost you around £180 then £40+ to set it up. This is the most cost efficient way of gettin power to begin with. The best money i've ever spent is £14 for a book called "how to modify your mini" by David Vizard. Also "Tuning the A series by the same chap. Although they wont make your mini go faster on their own they will help you plan what to do to it. Then its just a case of savin. Both excellent books tho :-

Although i haven't got one and they're a bit pricier because of the great stuff you get with it, the Somerford minis stage 1 is real good. Minispare is supposed to be good too
