Yep they are caps. That is what is spinning.

So how would I proceed with this as I was able to unscrew the left wheel nuts off with the cap on, is there a way of taking the caps off?

Thanks

Trying to remember what my mate did with his. I think he managed to force a smaller socket on his to remove them. I will be up our workshop tomorrow so will have a look to see what the score is.

Are you using the right socket size?

the socket fits, its a snug fit with no give. I can't seem to think where I have gone wrong. It is not slipping between the nut and the socket. I can visually see the nut moving with the socket but it doesn't unscrew instead it slips.

I apologise if I am making it sound all confusing!

No you are fine with your explanation. Worst case scenario the nut will have to be drilled off and the stud replaced. let me have a look tomorrow on Pauls car and i should be able to clarify whats going on.

In that case Moke spiders advice is relevant.

I guess, the nuts have been over tightened in past, stripping the spindle.

Get a sharpened chisel and chisel the chrome-looking cap off of the nut, which is underneath the cap. Then use a socket on the nut. It'll take about 5 minutes if you have a small chisel. Alternatively use an angle grinder and a chisel to break the cap off.

It's a very common problem.

Could also try the angle grinder with a metal cutting disc fitted, quick and easy, only mentioned it because I have recently used one for almost the very same purpose.

Great news everyone! I have managed to get the nuts off, had to take the caps off with a chisel, one of the nuts still refused to come out which caused the nut go rounded. so had to force in a old socket with a hammer and managed to screw it off.
Getting the hub nuts off was a nightmare! It broke one of my socket drives, I put tons of WD40 on and used the hammer to break down the rust around hub nuts, with my friend's help we managed to get the hub nuts off without damaging the nuts!

Cheers everyone for your advice, you practically saved my life!

If you've rounded one and had to hammer a socket on I'd replace it, it's the sort of thing that will come back and bite you - probably at the side of the road when you need to change the wheel quickly!

Best to fit all new wheel nuts, but not the ones with the chrome caps.

Of course I am going to change the nuts as they are looking pretty knackered at the moment. So which ones would you recommend me getting and yet looks good on the wheels?

From the Minispares website:

"Wheel Nut for Rover Cooper 8 Spoke. Price is for one wheel nut not a set as pictured. You must use a 6 sided socket and not a multi sided 11/16"socket to avoid damaging the wheel nut"
