It is a real random thing as to whether certain Minis work in the rain or not. My first, a standard 1977 1000 was HOPELESS when it was wet. The engine was changed after the head gasket went for a similar engine from a 1979 car. I could almost drive this through a river and not have any issues. My next Mini, a 1275GT with 1330 engine was also brilliant in the wet. My 25 less so. My Mayfair was ok but would play up on occasion, even when fitted with electronic ignition. All had the shield...

i had one, after breaking down in heavy rain. I now coat my electrics in damp start (from holtz) (after my sheild fell off on the motorway). 7 years on and i have never had an issue!

You can make a small shield to fit behind the grille, as above.
More important is to have the wiring and ignition components in good condition and clean. Arrange it so water on the wires will drain away from connections.

I've used spray on ignition sealer in the past for cars I've had with points.
My Mini is and auto which are meant to be quite useless in the wet, but I use it in the dry only and it has electric dizzy, so I hope if I ever get caught out in the rain then I'll be ok.

I asked the exact same question to the guy at DSN Classics when I popped in the other weekend.
He basically said that if your car ran fine without it then don't bother with it.
Rain isnt the main cause but the fine spray of lorries which would pass through the front grill.
He said the main problem was caused by moisture getting in the HT leads at the plug end, and that this was reason many of the early covers failed to actually rectify the problem. However now with the addition of the long covered end to leads at plug end (and dizzy) this has really negated the need for a cover.
If however it is a problem it may be worth fitting .... or as he said just don't drive so close to the person in front.
