Dude, trust me its the best thing you can do! so much fun.
Im currently working the ski season in Morzine with my mini, and will be doing a similar return route to what you have mentioned.
with regards to preparation for the journey, i got a full service done, and then did a longish non-stop journey to see if any problems arose, i did a 200mile round trip from home to Bristol and back, and sure enough a few things popped up. an engine mount worked loose, so she clonked every time i changed gear! and the coil pack decided to die! with these problems sorted, i set off for the french alps, and it didn't skip a beat.
With regards to stuff i would take, here is my spares kit:
- coil pack
- HT leads
- 2 x spare wheels
- oil
- wd40
- brake fluid
- coolant
- jump leads
- cable ties and tape
- good tool kit
- jack
- high vis vest
- triangle
- breath tester kit (EU req)
- torch
- a good sense of humour.
Have a look on my thread http://www.theminifo...mini-adventure/ so you can start getting excited!!
Enjoy it mate, and if you end up coming to Morzine let me know!
one last thing, there has been an exceptional amount of snow, so i would recommend you do get winter tyres probably need to go 13" and chains. I currently only run summer tyres, but i just won't use it if the roads are bad!
Have a good one and post some pics so we can compare ;)

Good idea about the long drive. I have an issue with fumes getting in at the moment so have sealed up the boot to see if that helps.
Can't go too far without feeling a bit funny so need to get that sorted or I'll have to use another car

the exhaust gasses can sometimes be if the tail pipe is too short, the reason for this is the gasses get caught in the vortices that swirl round the back of the car and then come in through any cracks and crevices. if the tail pipe is slightly longer, the gasses get thrown out past this vortex, and then clear of the car! I had it before on one of my old ones! the more you open the window the more comes in!!

Yes, this is something that I'm looking at. I also fitted a side exit exhaust as I'd read that centre exits are worse for this problem.
The trouble is I'm not entirely sure if it is the exhaust or something from the engine bay and I keep changing things about so I have no bench mark. I'll extend the exhaust and take it out for aing run with the boot taped up and see how I get on...
