I made my own from a bit of quarter inch thick steel plate I had kicking around from another job - it now lives in the "special tools" drawer waiting for the next time it's needed.

Check that your front subframe rear mounts are okay.
I had pretty much exactly the same problem as you, juddering under braking, and discs seeming to get warped.
Changed discs twice, check bearings repeatedly etc.
Changed my front subframe rear mounts and the problem disappeared. The mounts looked okay on the car, but once they were removed, they pretty much fell apart.

ibrooks, looks like you were spot on - thank you!!
I took the hub nuts off, torqued up the bearings with my shiny new flat washer from Minispares, replace the tapered washer and hub nut, re-torqued and... no squeaks, no wobbles!!
There's still a little bit of run-out in the n/s disc, but much less than there was and it's not noticeable on braking. Fingers crossed things stay that way!
Thanks to you all for your input, help and advice! :)

The bad news is that once a car has been run on a slack taper bearing, the bearing should really be considered scrap. It would be fine if it hadn't been driven but now you really should replace it. Or at least the people who fitted it wrong should.
Curses - thought that might be the case... :-(
