Ahhh I see..(Just ran out side and looked at mine :- )

So last questions, whats the difference between a single back-box system and a twin?

And does the car need the twin??

:)

Well if you check my last message, i've just amended it and added more information which might help?

But you don't need a single back box, as many fit a single because it's generally much louder. But i've got a lovely Maniflow twin-box system on my Mini and I find that plenty loud enough anyway.

Like I said, I don't know if fitting a single back box would be allowed on a twin-point/MPi Mini? But give Maniflow a ring or send them an e-mail as all they need to know is what year/model your Mini is and they'll know just what you need. But it's up to you if you want it in stainless steel (more expensive?) or standard and their back boxes are generally a nice shade of green, with a sporty chrome tail-pipe.

Also check if you need a new cat gasket too, because when the old exhaust system is removed, the old cat gasket is going to need changing at that point too?

Well you'll be alright now and it pays to get quality stuff from quality companies, then you don't generally get any hassle. But if your having your exhaust fitted by a garage/exhaust specialist, make sure their a good company and don't trust or believe half of what the spanner monkeys say at Kwik-Fit!

Well know you’ve said that I won’t help, used to work in a kwik–fit garage as well as a few others.
Have done 3 years at college and been messing around with cars for years.
So I do actually know, unlike some.

O well all right I will,

I'm sure a company like Maniflow or PlayMini will be able to sort you out with the correct system, but I know some people have fitted single back boxes as their much louder, but I've got the twin-box system fitted to my Mini and I find that loud enough and I'm not sure if a single back box would make a difference to the emissions and if it would be allowed on a Twin-Point/MPi Mini?

The difference between a single box and a twin box is the noise. As each box acts as a silencer, which reduces the exhaust note to a suitable level. The more you have the quieter the exhaust note, but compromises the performance.

The only part of the exhaust that has any effect over the emissions is the cat (were fitted) the rest is just pipe work, that takes the waste gausses away from the engine under the car and vents out back.

Also check if you need a new cat gasket too, because when the old exhaust system is removed, the old cat gasket is going to need changing at that point too?

Good point, these no point in rushing out buying a shiny exhaust only to fit it and find it leaks.
You will most probably need a new a new gasket, nuts (never use nyloc nuts on the exhaust) washers etc.
Before you even start try to have a look under the car at the condition of the mountings, as if they are in a sorry state it's much easer to change them at the same time as the exhaust will be off the car and out the way.

I got to thinking the other day because I still don't have the money to get my exhaust sorted.

What do you think to twin outlet pipes, either in the centre of the car, or split one on either side.

Due to moving to Germany and having to fit a second rear fog (which I like the look of) it lends symatry to the rear end.

So im thinking now Centre or split centre, How does this affect the mounting of the backbox etc?

I think they look really F***ing terrible to be honest! standard side exit is the only option imo. ;D

Thats not strictly true, the twin box systems will give you better performance......have a look at;

http://www.minispare...le.aspx?aid=314

The silencers arent just there to make the exhaust quieter, they have an effect on how it flows as well. I'm not going to pretend to say I understand the intricies of this but the above proves it.

The wizard Vizard has a good crack at explaining the whole thing in his yellow bible....

Oh and just for the record, twin exit exhausts look and sound phat !

Personally i don't like the split exit exhaust made by playmini... i think it would look good if they poked out through holes in a body kit bumper but i just don't think they suit the mini, center exit looks sporty, particularly with twin tailpipes... side exit is more classic... but with shiney polished bits.

Thats what i think anyway... i've a maniflow 1 7/8ths" (thats the diameter) twin box centre exit... you don't really hear the exhaust over the noise of the engine but my old single box stainless steel with a 6 x 9 inch tailpipe used to rattle windows and set off car alarms.

I had a bit of a nightmare finding the right fittings for this... but i worked it out in the end... with a little help from TMF

Cool cheers for the opinion, you got any pics of you exhaust?

Was it difficult to fix? Because they have the mountings for side exit as standard!
