I have found an imperial proxxon socket set on the net for £100 but as the Halfords set £125 seem to be better would that be ok , I see the socket sets seem to be mixed imperial / metric but should I go for the first set all imperial for a mini restoration , cheers Shawbags .

Give people a chance to reply! It's only been an hour and a half!!

I have the halfords set and a set of imperial ring spanners. So far I've not been caught out on any project I've ever owned in the last 6 years.

I dont have halfords , instead a mix of Snap on , draper for big ones , some siegen ? ones which are exactely the same as snap on and a few odds.  They are all ok but they were bought 16 years ago at considerable expense , and are also not a set and are on stripper holders . The same with spanners really , i do wish i just had the lot in one case .

If i had to buy today i would get a halfords set for a number of reasons

Good value especially with the regular offers

Good quality for the money , not snap on quality but not far off and no where near the price

You can get them anywhere

You should be able to get a replacement easy

They come in a nice set with a lot of bits , so you will not have to buy something else perhaps wasting money on duplicated tools .

Halfords pro are brilliant! I use a set for general stuff but the sockets don't go up that big in size

I picked up an old imperial swinborne socket set a while back on ebay for £80 and a box of imperial spanners from a car boot sale.
I find the quality of older tools far better unless you're buying high end new stuff.

The Halfords stuff is good.

If you want to add to your collection, B&Q do a 3/8" imperial deep dish set on a rail for about £6 which is an absolute steal, and they are 6 point.

You don't really need to. Much like Snapon, because everything is stamped with the brand name, and everything is guaranteed (not warrantied incidentally, they are different things) for life, they don't need to see a receipt. Bring them a broken part and they will replace it. Unlike Snapon however it takes ages because they aren't really setup to do it. They have to order things, especially individual imperial sockets, from elsewhere and it can take a while.

I have had three parts replaced in mine and it has always been sorted instantly. Once by taking a socket from their one off sockets, the other two were ratchets (which some say aren't covered) and they just took them from a set they had under the counter with a few bits missing so I guess they use it for warranty replacements.

And have never been asked for a receipt - which is a good job as they are over twenty years old now!

Just be more patient next time. Some people are at work during the day and won't answer until the evening.
