Fitting Full Floor - Help! Part 1

Best Answer Ben_O , 17 February 2015 - 01:39 AM

I think you will find that they do bow out in the middle.

i have just taken a picture of mine from above hoping you can see the 'bow' in it.

Don't forget that a Mini is narrower at the back than at the front.

I've just done a full floor and heelboard in mine. I had to pull the tunnel bit in with self tappers. And long clamps also through the gearstick hole

Hi all,

I managed to get back out to the car tonight to do a little more fettling. So here's what I've found:

I've managed to get the drivers side door step to meet the outer sill at the front and back but in the middle its about 8mm further out than the sill.

I've measured the inner sill to door step lip on the drivers side compared to the passengers side at the cross-member and the drivers side is 8mm wider (blue arrows)

I've measured the lower lip of the step at each end (red arrow) and in the middle (yellow arrow) and it is 15mm in the middle compared to 11mm at each end.

As the lip appears to bow outwards in the middle, would it cause any problems to weld in all in place and then trim the door step lip back to meet the outer sill lip?

thanks for your help

Chris

Hi Ben,

thanks for the photo, have you got any further thoughts on what do to solve it?

The passenger side inner sill to door step lip measures 62mm at the cross-member, with its curve. The drivers side measures 70mm.

I've had a go an hammering it in, with little success, but I can't see I'm going to be move it 8mm without distorting the panel . If I cut 8mm off the lip I'll still have a curve and some lip to tack some seam strip too. Is it serving any other purpose? i.e. does it matter if I trim it down?

The mismatch is worse at the x-member and this is where the outer sill is tied to the inner, so I'm never going to move it outwards. so not sure how to fix it otherwise.

Or I weld it in position, leaving the door step lip and just having a mismatch between the outer sill and step - would this be covered by a seam trim?

thanks for your help

Hi Guys,

I'm sorry to pester - but how would you proceed? This is something I want to try and get sorted at the weekend if possible.

Thanks

Chris

8mm is quite a lot but if you fit the sill where it fits, i cant see any trouble with linishing the edge back to meet the sill lip.

How does the door fit along the bottom?

I suppose it's possible you have got a dud step panel but i suppose it is too late to exchange it for another?

Hi All,

I just wanted to say thanks for your help / advice.

I resolved it by using the, soon to be patented, Sill Puller 2000.  :-)

I bent up a piece of 1.5mm steel and slid it between the outer sill and door step.

Then I used a reversed clamp to pull the outer sill out to line up with the step. Clamping the two panels together and moving along.

and now it's nicely in line

thanks again,
