I fabricated a cover for my Mk lll bulkhead access hole.  Can  anyone provide a specification for the necessary wiring and cable drive holes I need to make in the cover?

I don't think you would need any holes in it if it centre binnacle.

IIRC they are just left open from the factory just so you can access the bulbs without having to take the binnacle out.

If it's off set clocks, then you only have a large hole for the wiring loom to pass through

My car is center binnacle.  I'm installing the cover to reduce the cabin noise level.

What is the size of the wiring/cable hole?

I don't think you need it as it's centre binnacle.

As i said, I think it's only left open to give access to the bulbs in the back of the binnacle.

With the plate being flat, are you sure that your air filter will fit in once the engine is in.
I know my hif6 with cone filter sticks slightly into the recessed bit on my bulkhead plate.

No, I don't know if there will be a clearance problem.  My car is disassembled to the part level, so I'll have to wait until I have the engine installed to check.  If necessary, I can modify my cover to provide any required additional clearance.

Ben, I know that the center binnacle design has various seals around the binnacle and gauges to reduce noise and prevent fume ingress.  It seems like a poor design, and I will be installing insulation on the bulkhead, which requires the cover for complete coverage.

My sky had offset clocks and a removable blanking plate over the centre hole. When I changed to centre binnacle I retained the blanking plate and just drilled hole for speedo cable. The blanking plate is contoured and gives a nice finish. Can't you get a proper blanking plate from a later mini ?

Is the blanking plate contoured to allow air cleaner housing clearance?  I have no source of used Mini parts here in the US.  I am envious of the plentiful supply (and low prices) of Mini's in the UK.  Is there a source of used bits willing to ship to the US?

Yes the contours are there to clear the air filter. I've got a hif44 fitted with one of the big black donut filter housings fitted. Obviously I already had the plate because I was just changing the clocks. There seem to be plenty of people on this forum breaking minis ( mixed feelings about that myself) so one might be worth contacting. However my main point was that you can definitely have a blanking plate and centre binnacle. Perhaps you could dish the plate you've got or better still make an oversize plate - dish it then trim to fit. Cheers Steve

Here's the plate on mine.
It has a pressed in section for the filter.
I have fitted a centre speedo and had to drill a hole through the plate at the bottom of the contoured bit so the speedo cable fits.Attached File  image.jpg   53.34K   33 downloads

Thanks to all for your assistance.  I found a source on TMF willing to ship to me in the US.  Job done!

I have received my panel cover.  What is the installation orientation; i.e., is the wiring loom hole at the top or is at the bottom?  I assume that it must align with the rear if the speedo, but with my car in bits I don't know where that is!
