Mine was behaving EXACTLY as you described. I replace the cable with a new one, same issue. I took the inner cable out and brazed up the end to make it a couple of mm longer and re-filed the squared drive onto it. Where the cable drive end was squashed to make the square drive, it wasn't quite square enough and tapered off a bit causing it to slip, this was on the speedo end. I think this will fix your problem, only took ten minutes really.

Thanks Ethel. I've tried again to turn that wheel and I can't. But I have noticed a suspicious click whilst in neutral (pinion is out) I think its an engine out job.

Back again as i have now managed to fix my speedo. Hpal you were right the cable is to short but why its brand new? anyway to test the clock as stated in many posts put drill on the engine end of the speedo cable and run in reverse, speedo should work. To test gearbox end, raise both wheels, put car in neutral, turn road wheel, spindle should turn. I tested the gear pinion and bush 1st, from underneath the car with my fingers, then assembled the cable and checked that it turned before attaching to clock.
Everything was working fine but the speedo still refused to work, so i re-examined the new GSD415 which was 33" long. The new cable only gives a maximum of 20mm at the gearbox end, my old cable gave 30mm. By this time I had ordered another GSD415 cable from a different supplier, this was 48" long ?? but still only gave 20mm at the gear box end (what hope have we got?) to solve the issue I simply took my old outer cable, replaced the inner wire with the new one and got 30mm. I put it all together and it works.
