Hi all, I've recently purchased a mini, and began tuning the 1275 engine, I will be running a specialist components 5 port fuel injection kit with typhoon ecu and was wondering what camshaft anyone could recommend for fast road and track use, I have a separate head which I shall work on too, any info on cam choices and head specs for the above would be great, I was aiming to achieve around 90 to 100hp.
Will much bottom end work be required to handle the above power too,
Any advice appreciated
Cheers chris

Before you go down this road too far, see if you can drive a few Minis at various states of 'tune', while it may well be a Mini with 90 - 100 hp will drive the way you like, it also may not drive as you expect, depends of course what you are thinking of using it for, but I say that usually above about the 85 - 90 HP mark, while fun to drive they are not as easy to drive.

A mate of mine dead set wanted 100 HP in his - until he drove one, then he was far happier settling on around 75 HPs.

While some love them (and I do - for short periods), they are not everyone's cuppa tea.

.. what camshaft anyone could recommend for fast road and track use..

In all honesty, you cant combine these two uses, and not only engine wise but also in terms of suspension setup, you need two completely different setups.

Also remember its torque and suspension setup that makes your car quick, not the max BHP figure

You might find a well setup 80 bhp mini faster than a typical 100 bhp mini that has only a 'top end' engine.

Cain good to know that your similar set up achieving what I estimated it would, also what would you say that cams useable rev range is, ie when it comes on cam and runs out of puff, I don't want to put something in that with the right head work will just allow the bottom end to destroy itself and what is the reliability like?

Thanks for the many replies,

Jaydee i see where your coming from, and am aware of setup, suspension wise and the difficulties of full race engines on the road, done it with my previous sprint/ hillclimb car and it gets tedious, I'm not looking for a full race engine set up, but a nice compromise of reasonable drivability with a bit of grunt, and think the fuel injection will also help with this.

Cheers

It isn't too " camy " tiny bit spluttery under 2000 rpm but after that it's so smooth! My red line is 6k I hit peak torque and 4k so the cam is very useable and easy in traffic! I went with an med balanced wedged cross drilled and hardened crank then central main strap and a full gearbox rebuild with full straight cut gear set and a 4pin even with the horsepower the car has great road manners low down! It is ruinously expensive to try to achieve big power but it's great fun lol everyone needs to enjoy their earnings somehow :)

I'd suggest you to have a look at manifold off-setting, it may help to iron out most of the lumpiness making it easier to map and improving overall drivability.

I've seen an SC exhaust which is clearly developed for that
