..I certainly wouldn't upgrade this head. If you can't quickly get hold of a replacement and need to get car going then give it a try. Only cost will be the gaskets and your time.
Definitely not upgrading this head. If I can't find a reasonably priced 12G940 within a sensible distance then I'll stick this one back on; just lap the valves in and for the cost of a head gasket give it a whirl. Used to use copper gaskets put on dry years ago, is it still the same?

If you're planning on trying your hand at porting then just use the cracked head for practice.
As others have said, with 940 heads being readily available it's really not worth the risk of starting with a substandard head.

Took advice from you all and decided to 'ave a bash at porting and shaping. As I couldn't source Clive Trickey's book easily I went with Mr. Vizards recommended chamber and port shape. Lapped the valves in, cleaned everything up prior to fitting valves and noticed......oops! chambers 2 and 3 had hairline cracks from inlet to spark plug screwholes. Oh well, it was only an exercise and so into the scrap bin. Back on ebay to buy another head.
Think this concludes the chapter now chaps. Thanks for all your input.
