I find if you grind the panel clean either with s grinding disc or flap disc then the old paint stays in the recesses of the spot welds thus showing you exactly where they are

They are called Cleco pins. They pull the two panels tight together before plug welding. They are very good to areas where welding clamps cant reach.

Nope they are not cleco pins, they are actually skin pins in this case 1/8th. Clecos use a pair of pliers but we digress. There purpose is to clamp the panel tight in place. If you have a look at the Project Paddy link in my signature below I use a different type of skin clamp. Clecos are ok but they do not have that much clamping pressure. Ideal for holding things in place.

I think they make things much easier, especially if the wing needs pulling in a bit to the bulkhead and crossmember. I recon you could do it without them but I guess its your choice. I'm thinking of getting some as I've got a lot of panels to do so know they'd get used a lot.

Just to break the spot weld. Having those pins or similar makes your life so much easier. Would not be without them.

You'll need a special spot weld drill bit Sammy. If you look on the Machine Mart web site you'll see them. Around £8 each, or you can get a set of them at £20 odd.
