If it is surface rust then I would recommend spending some using fine (about 300 grit) emery cloth, as sometimes if the steel underneath is not pitted they can be brought back to life.

 

Also worth carefully checking the crank tail where the primary gear runs, as this does not get reground and if the rust is very bad here you may be better off going for a replacement crank.

Bit of luck there as the primary gear was left on the crank and is fine !!!! Will try the emery cloth carefully and see what we get. Cheers!!

Would suggest you start on the main bearing nearest the primary gear as that tends to suffer the most from wear.

+1 for 62S's comment, once you have cleaned up the main bearing at flywheel end have a look for a raised ridge in the middle of the bearing - this is exactly where the oil groove is in the main bearing shells.

 

If you can't see or feel a ridge then the crank may not need a regrind.
