Hi. Yes I saw the 12A408, but can't seem to find any source for it in the UK. That would probably be the best option for me.

That housing Moke Spider posted a link too .. rare as rocking horse s*** in UK now. Couple have gone for silly money on ebay and been pretty badly corroded too. That is a source for something similar in Oz as my A30/A35 colleagues have been looking for them. The standard head on those cars doesn't have a thermostat fitment so has to be in the housing or hose .. and the latter is apparently not the best place to fit one.

SPI and MPI cars are not common over here so I have no experience with them. I know the last cars had the front mounted radiator with long top hose. Did the SPI have that same setup or do they use the short top hose and side mounted radiator like earlier cars?

The Spi has the usual side radiator, and short top hose as with the older cars. It has a sandwich plate between the head and the thermostat housing, with a heater take off hose and a threaded stud hole to attach the radiator bracket to. The thermostat housing has only the main top hose outlet.

They do a billet alloy one but I don't think with a sender take-off point

There are also these
http://minisport.com...th-temp-adaptor
they were fitted to a number or cars including the very early 997 Cooper, but should be fairly easy to obtain.
Wondering whether to try and get one from minisport in Aus .. my son is travelling out there in May to Sept!

This is MPI with front facing rad.
This could well be 1.3 Marina/Allegro, it was for a plastic air bleed cap originally

They do seem to be a little rarer than I first though, they are still made new here in Aust, but there are cheaper places to get them than that I linked up.
