Has anyone used anything other than the standard manual push pull choke control. Im toying with having a knob to control it and doing the same with the heater.

This is my idea using arduino and a servo. I mocked it up on an old hs4 https://youtu.be/nt1HtX-0Z10

I haven't used servos on a Carb, but have done so to operate a heater. Temperature would be a serious issue with using it on the Carb, I'd be inclined to remote mount the servo from the Carb.

 

I can't lay my hands on it right now, but I seem to recall that right near the end, SU either experimented with or had in production an Electronic Choke control, I think for the Jag and Range Rover Range, not 100% sure on that, will dig about. They were also toying with Injection around this time too.

One of my 'spares' HIF44 has an electric choke I think. There is a cylindrical part with two connections on the side and no apparent cable choke fitting. No idea how it works though. They tend to be controlled by the cars ECU using the water temp sensor.

Yes the HIF E had an electronic choke, it's fully automatic with no driver control. It does indeed need an ECU and various sensors and isn't very reliable in the long term.

Assuming you just want to control the standard choke with a mechanical link to a servo, and that to be controlled by a rotary switch or similar, I see no reason not to do it.

You'd probably want to use a rigid linkage to push / pull the choke lever and do away with the return spring. Otherwise the servo would be working against the spring and could cause issues. And I'd look for somewhere on the engine to mount the servo to avoid movement of the engine adjusting the choke which could happen if the servo were mounted on the bulkhead.

If you want an automatic electronic choke control that monitors the amount of choke needed, I don't see there's enough gain for the effort.

As Dan says the later HIF E has electronic choke control uses servo motor on the carb.

 

I think the HIF44E units were fitted to Maestro and/or Montego in mid 80's.

im not trying to make it automatic although that would be easy enough to do, just need a signal from the temp sensor, i just want rid of the push pull, its purely for aesthetics. i sorted the link to my mockup, had it set as private, just need to build a mount for it.

Nice idea.
I'd put the servo on a rubber mount on the bulkhead.
You've also now got he thinking about feeds to the Arduino from the temp sensor and the rev counter. Add a time delay for when you start the engine and then use your feedback loop for the servo: cold engine and revs below 800rpm and open the choke. Or visa versa. Cool!

yeah i had thought of doing something like that very simple to implement once the mechanical side is sorted. my main reason was for a aesthetically pleasing dash, so instead of the push pulls ill have a nice knurled aluminium knob but if i make it automatic it would free up a knob for maybe fan speed control, im just playing with ideas for something different

If you had a rotary switch with an off position, you could use That as Auto and keep a choke override.
At you planning the same servo control for servo control of the heater valve?
Do you have a pic of the knobs you're using?
