hey

basicly i have a foam on the firewall on the engien bay and also foam on the inside looks crap! is it needed or can i pull it out?

i will get pics tomoro when i get home from work to help see what i mean

didnt no if it was heat sheild or sound proofing or what so id thought id ask first

All of this will be soundproofing. Under the bonnet will be flame resistant but none is essential. Over time they will sag and collect moisture, its all cheap stuff to replace.

When I restored my mini I dumped the under bonnet sound proofing as it looked messy and had retained moisture over the years and lead to a lot of bulk head rust. Now it is painted with a coating of body wax at the top Under the scuttle area, so I can see if anything is trying to take hold and nip it in the bud. The only thing with this was I believe the wiper motor was mounted on it so was loose in the bracket afterwards.I had to make up a rubber spacer out of an piece of old exhaust rear mount.

Why not remove the old spongey stuff, treat any blemishes/rust etc and replace it with a Minispares soundproofing kit. It will be very noisy otherwise.

Agreed about the noise part. You can also make one for cheaper too if you wanted to save a few $$

I've just removed mine, admittedly the engine noise is quite loud, but not unbearable. I quite like it

right do i need to remove engine to do this job? as that's something i cant do

Nope, it is possible to rip out with the engine in place. May need a stanley knife for a couple of bits but it's a pretty easy job :)

sweet i shall do that and i think my new carpet gets a felt sound proofing kit with that so i will just sound proof the inside

When you rip out the old foam be careful you don't damage / dislodge any wiring.

If you're replacing the carpet, have a look in the ICE forum for SilentCoat. It will be much better than just felt/foam.

On my 1275 i removed the engine bay piece but ive kept the sound deadening(as much as possible anyway) on the interior side and its not as loud as my 998 which has none at all :)

Removing the stuff inside the car makes a very noticeable difference to noise, whereas the stuff on the engine bay side dosent really seem to make a huge amount of difference. As above the stuff on the engine bay side is also notorious for soaking up rain water, which in turn tends to corrode & rot the back of fuses boxes, causing all sorts of electrical problems.
