I expected to find a notch in the pulley below the fan to measure the timing against the little saw toothed guage next to it. There's no notch on the pulley.

There's no window in the top of the clutch housing, which I think is the other usual option.

Is there anywhere else I should look, or do I just need to replace the pulley?

If you run a finger nail round the pulley can you find it ? Might be a groove instead of a notch, then a dab of tippex will do the trick.

If not then not sure apart from timing it by ear?

There are some pulleys which have their timing marks in different places depending upon their applications, eg Marina and I think MG's and Moggies were timed from underneath.... and of course as these seem to be interchangeable end up on mini engines for some reasons.

Do you mean the timing mark might be on a face rather than on the rim? (That's the only alternative I can think of.) And if so, what's the easiest solution?

they have been known to be etched as well so get it clean.

rocker cover off. get 1 or 4 at TDC then you only have 2 places to look.

I agree with Nick, find true TDC for piston 1 on its firing stroke and feel/look for a mark on the pulley adjacent to the zero pointer.

If you don't find a mark with piston 1 at TDC, you can make one.  Punch or file a tiny dimple/notch adjacent to the zero pointer and fill the mark with white paint.

had the same problem recently with a MED flywheel and one of their crank pulleys no marks on either, as above move the engine to TDC then create a mark I used a white marker pen

If you have the opening in the wok, then you don't need timing marks on the fly. You can use the nut that holds the clutch plate in.

If you're trying to find it by getting a signal of No. 1 Cylinder, try it on No.2 - may or may not be there.

If it's a long way off, then I would recommend replacing your Harmonic Damper ASAP, you could otherwise be looking at a busted crank before long as this is one of the sure signs of a failed Damper. Do Not underestimate what that 'Pulley' does.

Wok? Typo? Or a term / euphemism I'm not familiar with.
How do you use the nut that holds the clutch plate in?

I tried all four cylinders, but to no avail.
Then I put a mark on the pulley and turned the encgine one full rotation, but still nothing.
I don't think the timing is off by so much. There just isn't a notch on the pulley's edge. (I assume the bottom pulley is aka the harmonic damper?)

He did not read your first post where you say you don't have the opening in it.

A badly shaped Wok . Clutch cover.

Sorry wok = clutch housing. Take it off and it looks like a wok.

Top clutch bolt is at tdc. Use an timing gun with advance built in. My flywheel has been skimmed down so it has no timing marks

If the pully is good then changing the wok is possible in the car.

A euphemism I was not familiar with. But now understand ... and like.
