Indicator & Hazard Light Problem

Best Answer KernowCooper , 07 May 2015 - 05:32 PM

Still points to a dirty connection, or a flat battery. You say the battery is charged, so have you checked the fuses on the fusebox and the related wiring, when you put a load on a circuit and the voltage drops off it points to a dirty connection

Morning chaps & chappettes!

I seem to be having a problem with my hazards and indicators. None of them are working!

I had to pull over due to getting a bit lost, so i put my hazards on... they worked for about 20 seconds, then just died. I've changed the hazard relay and the flasher relay with no joy. The flasher relay under the dash constantly clicks (very fast) when i put any indicators on.

Any idea what this could be? I've checked as much wiring as i could and I don't see any nicks or snags.

Thanks,

Sam

The relay clicking faster than usual means as bulb is blown or you have a wiring issue, have you changed the switch??

Short to earth (i.e bodywork)?

My first thought... checked all the bulbs but all are okay. I haven't changed the switch though!

I've traced as much of the cables without taking everything apart, and can't see anything causing a problem

Volt meter time to check the connections in and out of the switch, onto the stalk and then out to the lights, paying attention to the voltages in and out of the components

I'm getting 6v into the indicator stalk... That's not right is it?

Not unless the battery is flat, you should get battery voltage to the stalk, have you back tracked it to the flasher unit and checked the feed there

Battery is fully charged.

Getting 12v at flasher unit... but when i put the hazards or indicators on the voltage goes rather erratic. When i switch them off, the voltage doesn't rise to 12v. I have to remove the flasher unit to get the voltage back up.

I will be checking the wire from the flasher unit to the stalk

Join the 2 wire together you removed from the flasher unit and recheck the voltage into the stalk, if you have battery voltage then into stalk the wiring is ok, if your getting a reduction in voltage after putting the lights on it points towards a bad connection with a high resistance in the circuit. check it at all the points in my diagram above.

Joined the two wire... getting battery voltage at stalks. Green/Red wire has battery voltage when ignition is on or off. Green/White has battery voltage when ignition is on or off.

When ignition is off, if i move indicator up or down, the Green/Brown wire gets battery voltage. Same thing happens with ignition on.

My wiring looks to be of a later mini.. the flasher unit and indicator relay both are earthed.

This is confusing me to the max!!

I've also discovered that the indicator relay clicks once when i remove the green wire from the fuse box and clicks again when i re connect... is this normal?
