Hi

I have had the cylinder block skimmed which has left the insert sections of the engine number plate rivets in the block which need to be removed to allow a replacement engine number plate to be re-riveted into the existing holes.
Can anyone advise me on how to remove the old rivet inserts to allow me to fix the new engine plate?

Simply drill them out and use slightly larger rivets

The Scrivets (proper name) are harder than the cast iron block, making drilling them out difficult. As yours are now skimmed off flush just position new plate so that you can drill new holes in block avoiding existing rivets. Use standard Scrivets. Engine plate will hide old ones.

The old scrivets unscrew quite easily, you can usually grab the edges with fine needle nose pliers across the threaded section.

Good luck with that!

Ideally, they should have been removed before machining. Actually, I'm a little surprised that the Machine Shop didn't remove them prior to machining as if they were doing so with a tipped tool, they usually break the cutting tip. Grinding's no issue though, but not many shops do this (too slow).,

What would have been the drill dia used for the original scrivets?

About 1/8 inch, will check next time I'm in the garage.

But in my experience they are very difficult to drill out.

Thanks

From your experience, is the problem obtaining a drill bit to cut the scrivet remnent out?

That's what i did with mine. I was able to prise them out slightly with a very thin screwdriver and then twist them out with pliers.

I would say that i would rather not try drilling them!

The size of the drillings for these engine plate rivets is 4mm on an old pre-A+ block

More like impossible to drill out.

They are not intended to be removed, ever.   You could conceivably grind some flats onto the head and try unscrewing them, but that assumes you do this before you deck the block.

Why not try to stamp the engine number into the nice smooth surface left behind where the plate was previously ??

Yes. Trouble is too, even if you do get the correct type of drill bit is it will wander off to the softer material around it.

The scrivet heads aren't there, all that can be seen is the scrivet sections flush with the top of the
block

looking at picture doesn't seem that they are flush with block. Try dans advice post#5. Otherwise my advice post #3 is the simplest
