I then welded in the scuttle

20170305_171646_1.jpg

i also tacked the front panel in ...had a few issued then lining the wings back up turns out the front panel had dropped on one side i shall sort that today hopefully ...more to follow later

I got more done today...but no pictures sorry, drivers side wing went on a treat and the a-panel wasnt too bad either, although the gap to the door is a mm or so bigger than i would like.Theres a few shims i could take out but the the door will rub when it opens as it seems to sit slightly proud of the a-panel...might slot the hinge holes see if i can pull it in a mm or 2.

That was all done by dinner time,i then started on the passenger side ..tacked the a-panel on the gaps spot on between that and the door.

Then i started on the passenger wing and thats where it all went wrong lol,if i keep it level with the a-panel then theres a gap between the wing and the side of the scuttle and the bonnet gap tapers,if i push it in to close the gap then the a-panel flange is miles off. Also if you look at the bonnet gap it tapers at the rear almost touches in the middle and then is miles off at the front ...as a result i walked away before i broke something, ill take a few days to think about it then have anothe fiddle at the weekend

For some reason I had more difficulty with the passenger side heritage wing I ended up having to reshape and trim it slightly around the scuttle, same as you the drivers one virtually threw on by comparison.

Got another full days work on the front end today...and its all on.

20170312_154218.jpg

gaps arent perfect but their pretty close

Side on ...A-panel gaps reasonable,i also made up the little strengthener bits for the panel joins and welded them in

20170312_154235.jpg

Bonnet gap at the front is a little bit off but i couldnt get the wing in any further

20170312_154254.jpg

Driver sides better

20170312_154259.jpg

Sumat fishy going on with the scuttle but it was all welded in and too late to do anything with ...

You should be able to get to the back of the scuttle and ease it out a bit to close that gap up?

Lots done again today

todays job was to strip the subs ready to paint tomorow ...so i covered the car up first, figured it was gonna get messy

image_16.jpeg

Started by stripping the tank and the tank strap as they will also need to be painted black may aswell do them with the subs

image_18.jpeg

The rear sub was covered in this really thick yellow rubbish ..ive been dreading stripping it for ages incase this thick paint is hiding some nastyness

image_19.jpeg

But it all seems ok although i couldnt get the paint off the inside parts of the sub so im just going to have to flat it off and paint over it.

image_20.jpeg

Then i started the front subframe.

Firstly it seems to of had the 2 top mounts that are normally on older subs welded up,i've never noticed this on other subs is this normal or has the previous owner botched an old sub to make it fit?

image_22.jpeg

Oddly aswell theres been a few bits of welding done to it and theres weld spatter everywhere even though i cant see any reason for the welding,as in no rot or splits to weld up

image_21.jpeg

image_23.jpeg

I did'nt get the front sub finished as i got bored and my arms couldnt hold the angle grinder anymore lol, its nearly there about an hour or so in the morning.

So instead i cleaned the petrol cap off.

image_25.jpeg

Hopefully i can finish the Front sub in the morning and get some paint on them.

Been busy again today .... finished stripping the front sub first and flatted off some of the wierd weld spatter thats all over it,then i got busy with the primer.

Rear sub

image_26.jpeg

Front sub

image_30.jpeg

Petrol tank

image_29.jpeg

I like Primer grey ....everything looks ok in primer grey its only after this stage things ever go wrong.

image_28.jpeg

image_27.jpeg

image_33.jpeg

image_32.jpeg

Looks good in the pictures but as it dries it gets a grey matt like sheen to it,it can be polished out after but obviously i don't want to polish the subframes and the petrol tank.

I'm not too good at this painting lark so any advice on how to prevent or what the cause of this finish is then i'm all ears.

hi mate, build looks good, the car looked like something i am looking for at the start and now its showing to be a lot of work! The front subframe top mounts are interesting, but probably from the factory using up the old stock?

When you put panels in like the floors parts, have yo just but welded them?

Yeah most of it is butted upto the edge of the old panels and seam welded ...although you cant really seam weld a mini the metals too thin so its more a long line of multiple tack welds.

Then anywhere that overlaps such as where the floor meets the front bulkhead ive drilled holes in one panel and plug welded ...ive got a spot welder but theres not many places that could reach and the different arms for it cost silly amounts.

There was one part of the floor where i joggled the edge and overlapped it with the old panel. But i don't like the finish on that bit it looks messy in my opinion, although welding it was much easier.

Today i fitted the first part to permanantly go back on the car :)

image_35.jpeg

Rear sub...although i managed to drop it in the process and had to respray a bit ,you can see it in the pic right in the middle ...about the only bit u can see when the cars on the road ffs.

and i also prepped and seam sealed the engine bay ready to paint tomorrow.

image_36.jpeg

The aim tomorrow is just to get that painted as i have stuff to do in the house although i might get round to welding in the square i cut out of the rear bulkhead for the scaffold pole to fit through.

Unless your running internal brake/fuel lines, you'll have to take the subframe out again to get them in... ;)

When you have a new line fitted at a garage do you think they take the sub off to fit it ?

Its fidly but i've done it before.

Actually thinking about it when you have a new line put in at a garage they tend to run it where they like and it looks a right mess lol.

surely it'll take you longer to fiddle it in than just quickly take the sub out..?
