Right just been and done a compression test. Results as follows:

Working from left to right (not sure which way around the cylinders are numbered  :shy: )

150

155

160

162

I then added some oil down the spark plug hole and tested each again. Working from left to right:

180

170

175

180

So at least I have a definite answer now with it being worn bores. As mentioned above, I might be able to get my hands on a Metro 998 A+ engine. Is anyone able to confirm whether this would drop straight in after changing the engine mounts and thermostat housing? I have read that there may be some changes needed in terms of the clutch arm but not sure?

Thanks :)

Cylinders 1&2 slightly lower than others, but reasonably consistent. Roughly how much oil did you put down the bores? Could be bores, might also be worn rings.

Changing to Metro 998 should be fairly straightforward, but the final drive ratio is also likely to be different to Mini.

Yeah I thought that they were reasonable consistent as well. I put about a teaspoon of oil down each.

Either way is going to need a rebuild right? That sounds alright then, what difference would the final drive ratio have? The metro engine is complete with a gearbox as well.

If you have the 998 engine number put it into Guessworks 'engine/box' decoder and it should tell you what final drive is likely to be fitted.

A lot of the 998 Metros used a 3.65, but HLEs used a 3.1 final drive. For general road use a 3.1 with a 998 would be about right.

Those compression figures are great, very good sign, the next step is to pull the head for a refurb
