hello
i bought this pickup

Attached File  $_58 (4a).JPG   54.61K   39 downloads

about a month ago its been pretty much stripped

the front subframe has already been powder coated by the person i bought it from

Attached File  $_58 (3).JPG   77.42K   16 downloads

he also kindly drop the engine which came from ebay with a recon unleaded head in for me

Attached File  $_58 (2).JPG   88.5K   18 downloads
Attached File  20150416_201406a1.jpg   56.5K   20 downloads

got to plumb it in and refit wiring then when i know it all works going to replace the wiring with a modern fuse and relay panel and update all the wiring as its a bit of a hodge podge and lots of extra wires for earths.

started cleaning up the metal bits i can find

Attached File  20150502_163331.jpg   26.01K   4 downloads
radiator cowling grit blasted and resprayed matt black

Attached File  20150502_163438.jpg   28.06K   4 downloads
blasted and sprayed the seat belt mounts got to lacquer tomorrow

not much done yet will be taking the fuel tank off (to rust treat and respray) and dropping the rear subframe so my brother in law can straighten the rear member and make sure its all square and cool then will have it reinforced to stop any future problems
then it can go to the powder coater so it matches the front.

still undecided if it i will get a respray yet, something to think of in the future.

so i went to take off my rear subframe and fuel tank and would you know it i didn't have the correct flare spanner for the fuel pipe to the tank so i thought i will have lunch and get one from halfords but what size? so i thought i will buy all the different ones they had long story short none of them are the right size oh s*#t better order one.

finally got the rear subframe off after some interesting placement of spanners inside and a ratchet outside. started to strip the bits off and found

what a nice surprise to find one thread had been previously broken and replaced with a smaller and not well fitted thread and the other has not much thread left do i have it repaired or just resign myself to buying a new subframe the rest of it looks quite good a lot better than some of the 2nd hand stuff on ebay.  and new ones might make a massive slow down in my time scale as i save up for one.

Looks like an interesting project. I'm not sure what the recognised way is of fixing the mounting is. It's more tricky now as it's been bodged already.

I think I would cut some of the larger diameter bit off and weld on a replacement bit with a new thread on the end. The weld could be cleaned back and it wouldn't show. If you haven't got access to welding equipment etc a new subframe might be a better plan. I would suggest having a really good look at the subframe to make sure it's not rusty before paying to have it repaired.

Do any of the mini spares companies sell repair bits for subframes as I would think it's fairly common for this to happen.

The subframe seams in good condition apart fron the studs.
i did a bit of Google ing ans found that they used to do repair bits and parts but welding on subframes is frown upon.
my brother in law is a mechanic and said he can straight the rear cross member and i will chat him up to repair the treads
i think will get him to cut off the damaged one and the wonky one then weld the wonky one over then drill a hole about the size of the new stud minus the tread then get him to remove a section of thread from the new stud and slide it in.
then drill in the side and plug weld it in then grind it back then off to be blasted and powder coated

Going to clean and repaint or powdercoat everything that it metal and i have an increasing list of parts that need replacing. Then rewire everything as its a bit of a messs and the fuse panel is behind the clocks atm so got to move to somewhere more convenient. then the interior and buck will get an overhaul. More pics to follow as i get more done.

Wasn't this feature in a mini mag at some point I'm sure I recognize it.

We could be talking 10-15 years ago though?

Not sure but i think i remember it from back in the day when i was buying mini mags about 15 to 20 years ago. think the guy i bought it from said it was made pre 97 so been about a while and ment to have done some shows so if anyone knows if its in any mags or anything that would be cool. Have emailed the original painter to find if he has any info.

There's lots more than 4, but still very rare. I'd like one to finish my plastic mini set.

Only just alive but getting better with time. The body is ok but everything else that hadn't been replaced needs it.
