I've managed to get my alarm box out via the radio hole and have gained a gynaecology degree at the same time! I have no fob and didn't even know if the car had an alarm other than the red led being present, what worried me was it going off or immobilising the car which I have discovered unplugging it actually does! You just know it's going to kick back into life when the wife is at work or something.

I want to send it off for a recode, test and a pair of new fobs but that will stop me using the car for a while especially if it's broke! Plenty of 5AS on ebay but not the 3AS. can anyone tell me which wires need linking out to bypass the box? It's a very late 1275 carb so no ecu or anything just a relay I presume? I know it's not great to put it on the web so via pm would be fine by me,ta.

Thanks for that, it's not too far from me either, I'll give them a call. I was looking at these http://www.remotekey...entify_ecu.html because I dont know the story behind the lack of fobs so my box might be jiggered?

Try to find out if it was a single button or two button fob. I'm not certain, but I thought all 3AS alarms were single button fobs. If it is you do not need to programme the fobs. They are programmed by on car procedure of putting the alarm into programming mode and it is that which programs the fobs.

It is definitely a single button fob system but I don't have any fobs and as it came like that I don't know if the unit works, thankfully it's happy sitting there at the moment but I guess it could decide to arm itself or immobilise at any time. Looking at the cost of purchasing two single button fobs then hoping the various contradicting programming methods might work looks like a gamble compared to sending the unit for a test and matching to two new fobs at remote key in the link above or taking the car in to the place suggested. Of course I'll keep an eye out on Ebay for a fob or even a 3as unit complete with fobs in working order, that would be perfect.ta

Anyone near Stafford fancy trying to programme one of their spare fobs to see if my unit works has a bacon sandwich and a pint with their name on :-)

OK. I'd speak to one of these guys about these. They look identical to my original 3AS fob. Though ROVER did produce a smarter looking one later on

I think those operate the 10as system, it might work but again it might not and I still won't know if it's my box that's faulty or just not compatible, fitting a 5as box might work but again it might not as I've got no ecu as it's a factory carb car albeit a very late one.

I bet some one has a box full of spare control boxes and buttons out there somewhere!

From what I can see the 10AS is a 2 button Fob that was introduced from 95 on.

I'd give the e-bay guys a ring to see if they can tell you more about the single button fobs they have.

10AS is a two button system similiar to 5AS and used in Landrover vehicles. 3AS and 17VT are 1 button systems.
Your best bet is to send your 3AS to one of the keyfob programming service companies and get them to match a keyfob to it.
Or buy an already matched set (one was sold on eBay during last week).
It was possible to programme the keyfobs when it was installed on metro using features of the car, but AFAIK not with mini except with the dealer kit.

This is just not true,

You can program the 3AS on vehicle for a MINI. I know I have done it myself on a 93 SPI

My car has the same 3AS system.

My car only had 1 remote when I bought it so purchased an extra one.

With it I got instructions to program the remotes by putting the alarm into programming mode so the alarm system has to connected and powered on.

It's fairly straight forward once you've read the instructions!

Regards

Mike.
